What are your thoughts on service members in uniforms while traveling?

I believe service members need to maintain a low profile while traveling. I can pick out many service members in the airport who are not even in uniform whether it is camouflaged bags or the high and tight haircut. I ensure my hair is within standard. However, a high and tight is not needed to meet hair standards. It is a safety concern and a "quiet professional" concern.
When it comes to seat upgrades, service members are not allowed to accept a first class seat upgrade when in uniform according to current regulations. It may appear that the government has spent tax dollars on a first class seat when viewed by the general public.
Finally, you have to maintain such a critical and sharp bearing when in uniform as everyone has their eyes on you. When I am in civilian clothes, I do not do or say anything unprofessional. However, when in uniform, my guard goes up a few notches.

As a Vietnam Vet this brings back memories of coming home to a not so welcoming crowd, not that I was ever accosted (to my face anyway) but dammit I was always proud of that uniform and when traveling notice Military in uniform, they are what I once was and I'll never be ashamed of that.
I don't think the high and tight is a giveaway any more. 1/3 third of the boys and about 5% of the girls in local middle school and high school have military haircuts that would make the company gunny happy.
When I was in, all travel was done in Seasonal Service Dress "A's" or "C's", no utes and boots. Officers traveling on commercial transport in civilian attire, on orders, including PCS, traveled in "business casual" (sport coat, dress slacks, and tie).

I don't agree that short "military style" haircuts are a indication of being in the military. The short hair look is very popular. The average Hispanic gang member has a shaved head too. Hair styles don't mean much. However, carrying around military bags is a giveaway.
I never travel in uniform as I don't like to draw attention to myself. Plus from Hawaii everything is a long flight, so why mess up my uniform by wearing it on the plane. Drives me nuts when I see SMs wearing their working uniforms on planes though.
