So the other day I went out and purchased a Nintendo NES, yep that 8 bit little grey box that was all the rage in the mid-1980s. I took it home and set it up on my tv, turned in out, blew into the cartridge and started playing Super Mario Brothers!
Well all this excitement started an interesting discussion as I posted pictures of Mario Brothers, Ice Hockey and even Double Dragon on Facebook. The question became, what is the best "old school" video game?
And since I enjoy hearing what everyone here things, I figured I would post it here. So what is your favorite pre-2000 video game? Can be from any system.

CW3 (Join to see) - I forgot that it came out prior to 2000, that game has been ported so many times, and has been often imitated. That was a true classic.

For me it was Super Metroid. For its time it felt so immersive with the multiple zones, gear system and story. Not to mention the music was awesome.

I always enjoyed Space invaders.... then Crazy Climber, Donkey Kong, and Galaxia. I still tend to go towards pinball machines myself (if given the choice).

SGT Ben Keen, "blew into the cartridge" made me laugh, but oh so true!" I still love the old Mario/Duck Hunt combo personally. I think it's all about the nostalgia. That dog's laugh still makes me so angry!

Sadly TSgt (Join to see), the Duck Hunt gun doesn't work on newer TVs so no laughing dog here.

Yep, had to go out and buy a old CRT TV in order to play duck hunt. I didn't realize until researching that the glowing into the cartridge does more bad than good. It creates unneeded moisture and can rust the bronze pin outs. Use rubbing alcohol to and a cue tip to clean them.

Maybe not the best, but definently one that my brother and I played all the time was the original Finaly Fantasy. This and Tetris on the original NES.

SFC (Join to see) - I was a little saddened when I couldn't find a copy of Tetris at the store I went to when I got my NES. They say its one of the hardest games to find, I guess people got frustrated with all the shapes and threw it away. LOL

Pre-2000? I would venture to say old-school would be 16bit or earlier, like the SNES, Sega Gensis, TG-16, Neo-Geo. It could be argued that perhaps the 32bit systems were old school as well. But to me, the old school will always be 16bit and older, once it got into CD's it got 'modern'.

As I said earlier, the whole "Pre-2000" thing was just something I pulled out of air to limit this to the "older" game systems like the ones you mentioned. I still one of my friends having a TG-16, there was some sort of caveman game I think he had. That system just doesn't seem to have the hold on people like the NES, SNES, and Sega Gensis has.

Bonk is that caveman game. Instead of jumping on mushrooms, Bonk uses his head to bonk his enemies and obstacles. I'm not surprised the TG-16 didn't catch on....I have one, and would still play it if I could. Some good games the size and depth of SNES and Genesis but it came in a gace catridge literally the size of a credit card, maybe a little thicker. The TG-16 was also cool because it had CD support with adaptor and even a portable version like a suped up Gameboy, but the same cartridge for use on the TG-16 was also used on the portable, you didn' have to buy several copies of the game to work on home and mobile.

SSG Michael Hathaway - I think the whole one game over different platforms was just a little ahead of its time when the TG-16 launched. You are right though, it's development marked what I consider to be the start of a push to the better game play and graphics we see today.
