My retired Navy husband and I use "gig line" for anything that is askew, not straight, crooked in any way. Love that term! Have a hell of a time explaining it to my civilian friends when I let it slip around them. Huh?

So was it SNAFU that led to a FUBAR or a FUBAR that led to a SNAFU? Chicken or egg.

As of '97 frag was still in use in the Army. Friendly fire that wasn't because someone was so FUBAR'd they should have been fighting for the other side.

PO3 Bob McCord - Me either. As a Corpsman, caring for wounded Marines in Nam, I developed a huge respect for them. They are true warriors, and have a brotherhood I always envied. If ever I was to go in combat, I'd wwnt only to be with them.

Yeah, they were good for headaches, fevers, minor aches, pains. And the not infrequent hangover we Squids suffered. I'd pop a couple, breathe oxygen until they kickrd in. One of my worst hangovers was at Little Creek in Shit City. Was an endless line of guys for innculations with the air guns. I recall taking 6 APCs just to function. But, by 4:30, I was ready to hit the beach again. Crazy times, man.

Marines use POG as well. Although we all train and retrain endlessly in combat arms, infantry skills and tactics (from baker to pilot) , being a Grunt is special

Abso-f'kin-lutely. Office pogues our nickname for 0141's But of course not often too their face. There are at least three relatively junior operators with whom one did not "screw " with in the pre-digital age. The Corpsman(who was also keeper of your shot and medication record); the paymaster (especially in the days when it was paid cash minus all those deductions ) and the righteous clerk who find or misplace your leave record, your drug and alcohol training record and even your next duty assignment (look out Nome)

MSgt Jeffery Murphy - Not sure about the rest of the AF but at Mildenhall we had a feisty Col that would give everyone the ok to fly and she would even fly with us sometimes. Being a nonner didn't mean your job was any less important it was just a term we used for those that weren't mission essential. We did use it as a derogatory term though since it always seemed like we were one of the only people on base at all hours.

Fobbit only came around after there were FOBs in Iraq. During the invasion, they were still called REMFs.
