SSG Ray Petersen yes, but not the way most people may think. Yes, as job performance should include not just getting the mission done, but how they interact with their subordinates, peers, and superiors; how they treat civilians; how they live the values; how they are a team member and go out of their way to help others; how they interact with the community; how dedicated they are to the unit, the country, etc. Performance is not just what you do on one mission but all the parts leading up to it.

Good question SGT. In my opinion, its more than just job performance. I have known Soldiers who were outstanding in the field, but lacked the self discipline for simple things like getting a haircut, being on time, presenting a military appearance, or have any initiative to improve themselves or their unit. What is disappointing is that they have the ability and potential to be so much more, but were unable to put it all together. Good Soldiers will stand out and set themselves apart from others, and as an NCO you will know it when you see it.

SFC,

great response and I do agree that some soldiers do lack the discipline, and I have seen during my time in. One thing that I get caught up on is that I have seen where people who excel or have very high PT scores and weapons get treated like the golden child and can do no wrong what so ever, but when it comes to their job they look like a monkey trying to solve a math (sitting there scratching their head), but you have those soldiers who excel at their job, and have decent weapons and pt (shoot 32-35 on weapons, and have a 240-260 pt score) but yet one little thing and they get the book thrown at them.

I feel that the Army has gone away from where you should and have to know your job and only care about whats on paper, personally I believe this needs to change to what it used to be.

SSG Ray Petersen - Not uncommon for Soldiers to excel in one area and be weak in another. That is where mentoring, counseling, and leadership come into play. A good Soldier will respond and take initiative to improve their weaknesses, whether it be MOS competency, Soldier tasks such as PT and weapons qual, or basic Soldier responsibilities.

Cares about his buddies, not only does “his” job, but is willing to help others. It’s a team sport nothing less, it’s just more lethal than playing football, the stakes are higher.
