What do you think of China's growing military strength and assertiveness? Is China our next adversary?

China has asserted ownership of nearly all of the South China Sea and is building at least seven artificial islands in the key waterway. U.S. officials say they do not take sides in territorial disputes. But they worry that China could use the new islands — at least one of which includes a military-grade runway and deepwater harbor — to assert control over air and sea navigation and have called on China to halt construction. What are your thoughts? Is China a threat to World Peace and the US?

Sgt David G Duchesneau If they do become the next major adversary then they have definitely given us (7) Seven prime targets to complete wipe off the face of the earth in the Pacific Ocean without very much civilian damage. We just need to be prepared for an all out attack (which I don't think will happen) like we received from Japan on Pearl Harbor!

Colonel, I agree with you but the Chinese are very unpredictable and a bunch of sneaky bastards. Christ only knows who the hell they are really in bed with? One thing for sure, it's not us. And all of these 7 Islands could just be a decoy to keep us occupied and off guard.

SSG Norman Lihou And they're going to keep doing it. Because we're letting them. And we're going to keep letting them.

SPC Sheila Lewis - I would say something to the effect of 'just wait until China starts building islands in the Bering Sea'...but the sad reality is, we probably STILL wouldn't do anything.

History has proven "wait and see" doesn't work; let's simply ask China what it is up to.

Why should they stop? They know that no one is going to do anything but bitch about it.

Kinda reminds me of another country that is telling us one thing, but doing another. They appear to be using our distraction elsewhere to build up. Let's hope it doesn't escalate quickly. One day we could wake up & Taiwan will be under siege.

That area has been a hot bed for years.

Considering the South China Sea is the South CHINA Sea, one way of looking at it is like the sea off SOCAL being militarized by the USN/USMC. As long as the Chinese aren't militarizing waters adjacent to Hawaii/West Coast/Panama Canal/Allies' waters, it could possibly be tolerated. Possibly.

China is definitely a large concern in East Asia...
China is no real threat to the US. Their whole economy is based on ours, conflict / war severely damages China and the damage would take a very long time to recover, if they can?

Next to the Iran debacle, China is rapidly becoming a serious problem in the South China Sea with its land reclamation projects. Add to that, the pathetic foreign policy of this current administration, and we have a potential for major political and military conflicts down the road.

China attacking the United States makes about as much sense as a Walmart greeter attacking customers. The United States attacking China makes about as much sense as a Walmart greeter attacking trucks delivering goods to the store. (Sorry, it's the best I can do on short notice) Maybe I should just say that the US and China are commercial partners joined at the pocketbook. A major similarity is that both have governments that are totally disconnected from their people and their commercial/industrial bases. Every time they intervene in the affairs of either the people or the marketplace they screw them up even worse.
