There was life outside Philadelphia, outside Pennsylvania and outside America. I could become a skilled professional on my own terms. A SOLDIER

For me it proved that I could complete something. Before enlistment I just quit when things were hard so it was exciting to be somewhere failure was not an option.

I don't know about proving, maybe some things to myself. Most, maybe all the males in my family had served in one of the services, so the was the family tradition of service which I was raised to believe. I guess I volunteered Infantry to see if I was as tough as I thought I was at the time. I found out what tough men really were like, but came out of it with a reasonable respect for my own abilities.
The various Infantry Schools proved that you could be a lot more miserable than you thought possible and not die.

It proved I could be motivated to shave my hair and shave my face. Make myself part of the human race. I am now moving my arse at warp speed. Thank you United States Marina Corp! My Corp! Your Corp! Marine Corp!

I would imagine that to establish "proof" of something then there is a bigger question that needs asked: proof of what exactly?

My military enlistment proved that, given enough thrust, even a brick can fly.
Now let's see if anyone can figure out my cryptic metaphor.

Okay Dale, I'll try. You were a loose brick in a shit house and somehow wobbled out and fell onto a military vehicle, got transported to a better place and flew up to unrealized heights, a place beyond the expectations of a small meager insignificant shit house brick. Do I win the prize?
Note: I was one of those bricks myself.

SPC James Drury - Nice try, but nope. I enlisted in the National Guard after dropping out of high school. I have borderline eyesight but still managed to get flight status (flight one). Maxed my GED, got two college degrees and left the army due to injuries. I then became a chaplain at the age of 49 -- The US Army said I was too old so I joined the British army instead -- commissioned as captain (flight two).
So this blind, drop-out, broke-dick brick "flew" not once but twice.
It's either that or I was referring to the F-4 Phantom -- a jet with the aerodynamic properties of a ball of silly-putty.

Dale, thanks for that inspiring narrative. What more can one say for a high school dropout to realize so many dreams. I guess I could go out on a limb and say it all started with your service in the NG.
There is no "Silly Putty" in your amazing tale of accomplishment. Congrats to you and all your loved ones.
