Hi, I was just at meps and planned on going 11x option 40 but due to my eyes I wasn’t able to do that. I got 13F instead. They briefly told me what they do and it sounded the closet to infantry but I’m wondering what exactly do they do? Do they kick doors with the infantry but just have a radio to call in support? They still in the gunfight with the infantrymen? Thanks for the responses in advance

You don't kick in doors but you are with the Infantry and you call down fire from the sky. Look up AC-130 Spectre, A-10 Warthog, MH-60L DAP, and A/MH-Little Bird videos to see them raining destruction.

SSG (Join to see) - The infantry's job is literally to "close with and destroy the enemy." We train to kill the enemy; it actually is our job. While he probably could have phrased the question better and sounds a little naïve, in my opinion there is nothing wrong with wanting to shoot bad people in the face.

CPT (Join to see) recruiting would never make its mission without young men who want to shoot bad guys in the face.

CPT (Join to see) - All respect SFC, I never said that we should not, nor not want to shoot bad guys in the face; we certainly should and I certainly would. The concern is that a person that is prone to violence, and that is why they want to serve. If the only reason you want to serve is to kill, you need to reevaluate your life decisions. And the mission of destroying the enemy does not mean to simply kill the enemy, we learned that just killing alone does not work (Vietnam, Korea, Iraq). There must be a coordinated effort to remove the enemies ability to fight beyond simply troop count. I think what I saying is being taken out on context.
To clear it up, yes we must destroy the enemy, yes this means kill among other things; however if you only want to serve to shoot "people" than you are not in the right mindset.

For future reference please change your profile to future soldier or civilian. Unless you’re prior service. If you’ve not been to basic training yet and not left meps to ship then you have no rank and you’re not an airborne ranger at regiment yet.
Once you do all that then cool address yourself as such. Be forewarned the Army is wide and far calling yourself a ranger on a military forum may not be a good idea if you’re not one yet.
Something you should know. The order of events for you to get there are as follows.
1: get option 40 in your contract with 13f
2: get thru basic
3: get thru 13f AIT
4: airborne school then Rasp/rip
5:rasp/rip then airborne school
6: pass all that then you’re in regiment
If you don’t get option 40 at meps ask for option 4. Once you get to your first formation at airborne school a Ranger Instructor usually comes up and asks the whole class who wants to be a ranger. They can amend your orders there once you pass airborne course.

As a forward observer, you will be a member of a infantry platoon. If you are kicking in doors, you probably are not doing your job right. Your job is to integrate all fire support assets (mortars, artillery, rockets, close air support) into the maneuver mission You will be constantly reporting your front line trace, advising your platoon leader, and predicting the enemies next move. FOs should also be a secondary RTO who is well versed in comms

If you make into the Ranger Regiment, you will be expected to maintain the same high standards as the Ranger Infantrymen and required to do what ever is needed of you including your job of fire support.
You maybe be part of a stack breaching walls and doors. However, your main job will be operational support. Making it in a Ranger Battalion will open doors to bigger and better things such as SOF or SF. Quit or fail and you will end up at the needs of the army. Rangers are the best Airborne Infantry Regiment in the World.

Also with any MOS you are trained at basic training to kick in doors and react to being in a firefight doesn’t matter if you’re a cook, a Human Resources specialist, legal aide, or a medic or forward observer you’ll have to be ready at all times to kick in a door or shoot the enemy if you’re being shot at or ordered to.
