What effect does making commandants list on a 1059 have for promotions in the senior ranks?

When we board packets honor graduates from NCOES will be ranked higher. Potentially can have a effect. E-5 and above promotions are based on evaluations (NCOER & 1059s).

One time makes a great feather in your cap. Consistently making the list is serious street cred.

The Army put that column on your web/srb for a reason. Fill it to the best of your ability with DH, CL, and CD! The way NCOPDS is going lately (epitomizing critical thinkers), this matters just like these NCOs from my old unit and I at today's Infantry ALC @FortBenning!

The effects of making the commandants list being on ones 1059 when his or her packet is reviewed could be that point(s) that puts that Soldier ahead of his or her peers. It varies from board to board and the board members. The board may not even consider it at all because the Soldiers DA photo was the best of the pack. But it's good to have because you never know what they will need or look at. The most important thing is a good, well comprised, COMPLETED PACKET PERIOD. (foot stomp X3)

Commanders or Commandants, which program and at what level. Any additional item of significance in your records is a positive, the level of significance depends on the program and the timing.

CSM have you ever been on the commandants list?, and being a CSM what do you review when you look at packets for promotions after you are a SSG trying move up the ranks? And were you in the regular Army?

Yes I was active duty my entire career! I was on the Commandants list in each program I attended. NCOERs first, letters second (greater than standard awards they are personalized and still admissible
) difficulty of assignments, fitness, training and education with the emphasis on training. There are deeper discriminators which would share private message if you are interested. Thank you for your service.

It does nothing but help you. For those NCOs that claim that it can be used as a bullet on your NCOER- please read AR623_3. This is under para 3-17: Comments
a. Comments will not exceed the space provided on evaluation reports. Additionally, comments must pertain
exclusively to the rating period of the evaluation report; comments related to nonrated periods will not be included
(that is, schooling, duties performed while suspended, and so forth). Awards and/or special recognition received during
the rating period may be cited in evaluation comments (for example, “received the Humanitarian Service Medal” or
“named the NCO of the Year”); however, comments related to scholastic achievements are limited to AERs.
Your 1059 is non rated time and is your AER. This did not change with the update.

Commandant's List, in and of itself, very little to no effect. Honor Graduate ("there can be only one") rates an excellence bullet and can push you ahead of your peers on the new NCOER. For the senior ranks, remember it's about how you exceed over time not just a brief moment in time.

I would disagree on some level although a steady record over time can't hurt but then again, can't see it helping. I think making Distinguished Honor Grad on top of completing my Associates degree were very instrumental in me making MSG in the secondary zone. They were the most current things sitting in each of the sections on my microfiche at board time.

There is an ebb and flow as to what boards find most important from one decade to the next, especially depending on who the reigning CSM is. The fact that I was Distinguished Honor Grad at SLC had very little influence over my promotion to MSG. Consistently strong NCOERs, when the board looked at the most recent 3 to 5, weighed the heaviest in my favor when compared to my peers for the single E8 vacancy (especially given that 3 of the 4 had more TIG).

1SG Edward Tushar - How long did it take for you take make 1sg compared to your peers 1SG since you made the commandants list?

It can be the deciding factor between two equally qualified personnel for the same job.
