Just to start the conversation, I still make sure that my 'gig' line is straight every single time I get dressed.

I'm the only one at church who spit-shines my cowboy boots. Have had a person or two look down at them and act like they're grooming at the last minute. I can't stand messy footgear in appropriate places.

SFC Greg Bruorton - I always get the stupid question, "Why do you wear cowboy boots?"
I always answer, "Easier to kill the cockroaches in the corners."

SGT Carl Blas - I tell inquiring folks the same thing; much easier nailing roaches with cowboy boots. Love that HOG you're straddling . . . that is sharp! You've made a few modifications that bring the best to bear.

Retired at the 30 year mark in 1996 and still get give myself a high and tight haircut twice a week. I've saved a bunch cutting my own hair. Civilian haircuts are expensive.

I still start every movement (well except bowl movement) with my left foot. This have been particularly tough right now as I am laid up for several months with a tibial plateau fracture on my left leg.

1SG (Join to see) I still have the ‘screws’ that held my Plateau Fracture of the Tibia while it healed.

CSM Charles Hayden Passed 7/29/2025 the fact that you managed to get past that and still make CSM is encouraging. I am reluctant to push for E8 at this point. Hell, I can't even do a proper about face to Recieve The Report. It's embarrassing in formation. I had someone else take the platoon recently during a ceremony because I could not do the D&C crisply

The usual, the things that will identify you as prior service. Gig line, shoes/boots polished (old school), knife hand, Sir/ Ma'am along with sarcasm and my irritation with civilians! Just retire from the military, then take a job with the Gov., you'll understand the irritation!

My hair, Alice pack, H-harnes, boots, BDU's, cover, gloves and weapons stay on alert. My perimeter is being patrolled by two German Shepherds as I write this.
I can't shake the indoctrination to be prepared.
Kill!

Checking my gig line, "eat now, taste later", showing up 10+ minutes early, not carrying anything in my right hand so I can salute, using military time & date format, and removing my headgear when I go indoors - plus almost always donning something every time I go outdoors even just for a few seconds.
