In 1862 a battle was initiated at Pea Ridge, Arkansas in the west and in the east the Monitor ironclad left New York harbor and arrived at Chesapeake Bay. President Abraham Lincoln proposes that slaves in the border states be emancipated gradually, with compensation to the owners. This was 5 years to the day after the Dread Scott decision.

I was selected to go to Fort Sill for part of the FAOAC in 1990 after I graduated from IOAC. While there, we did a staff ride to Pea Ridge since it was the closest Civil War battlefield to Fort Sill. That was the first I heard of that battle. I did not realize this is the anniversary of it.

Thanks for letting us know COL Jon Thompson. I was at Fort Leavenworth in 1986 after company command for the CAS3 course. It was fascinating for us to be at such a historical post when we went out on "staff rides" and recons in an area which had many places which not changed much since the Civil War and Indian wars.
I ran out of up-votes for the day.
