What happens if a soldier avoids a deployment by fleeing to Mexico?

Okay I am not talking about me by the way. But I was intrigued by the question and I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere. I’d like to know if the mexican government would support the return of the soldier for court martial, how he could be apprehended or if he could even make it to the border anyway. Suppose he is CONUS by the way.

Why in the hell did your friend enlist in the first place? Deployments? No shit it's what you do, and were in a training mode right now not active combat I believe. Probably and hopefully significant jail time, and a dishonorable discharge and good luck getting a job that's not flipping burgers at McDonalds. Why anyone would do this is beyond me, Federal time would be worse than Afghanastan by a mile, I'm sure some Vet inmate who's run afoul might make him his GF for being a chickenshit.

Wow, the next Bergdahl already making his plans of going AWOL and Deserting his team members........
These new civilians coming in wanting to play GI JOE AND GI JANE need to vetted better. They are are just allowing anyone that passes in now...very sad and pathetic

I think it's the weak ass training of late that fails to make the individual a part of a team.

SN Jay Perry - that is why I said the next Bergdahl.....this person’s friend is talking about going to Mexico to avoid deployment.....I am making a comparison....Bergdahl thought about deserting before he really did it, this guy is doing the same thing.
I hope either 1. This person can talk this other person out of doing this or if he can’t then option 2. turn him in to higher ups.

Illegal immigration to Mexico is a crime and punishable by ten years in jail (isn't that ironic).
So after spending ten years in a Mexican prison, the solider in question would then go on trial under the U.S. military system for desertion and missing a movement. So more jail time.
Double jeopardy does exist under the UCMJ.

Technically it isn't double jeopardy because they are two separate crimes. The crime in Mexico would be illegal immigration; in the US it would be desertion.

As others have mentioned, nothing good will come of it. Why would someone join the military knowing that a deployment was a possibility?

When I had returned from o’seas(‘Nam and Thailand<-[2d tour].. I was assigned at Travis AFB... I was in town at a strip mall that was trying hard to survive California’s high taxes.. and was in a store that was like a flea market.. not many paying guests.. just a few of us. And there were Some hard-Krishna wanna-bes passing out flyers.. mainly to Military .. a couple approached me and tried to tell me how they could arrange for me
To go with them right then and they could get me to Canada.. I just said;
“You poor uninformed. Children.. the War’s been ended.. you must be tripping on some bad wacky-weed or s’thing in that group.. go get your heads together and come down to earth and get your current events together(They looked like they been eating too many black bean and grass pies.. (talk about lean.. more like frail) and get yourselves a good burger and beverage.. “. They got away from
Me pretty quick.. The flea market guy said they had to quit bothering
The shoppers or leave or purchase
s’thing..
Fairfield was a good town and tried to look out for us and would tell them to leave us be.. The town wanted our business.. Our base Cmdr had a meeting with the town leaders and told them to keep them hari’s away from us and we’d support the town and buy more stuff.. if not, he’d deploy a mess of us someplace that would appreciate us.. just try and not support the Airmen and find out..
A few of the council peeps weren’t convinced(I think they’d never been on a council in a military town or were just dense.. ). We waited, the Cmdr waited.. we know it takes time to get thing started..
town wasn’t doing much to dissuade the Krishna’s and some other types to quit soliciting us..,
So the Cmdr with help from the Pentagon .. announced a 2,000 troop deployment to a “yet in-named location” in the pacific for 90 days or until the sit-rep could be aleviates(actually the sit-rep was right there at Fairfield ). We had to be kept in the dark to pull off the charade the Cmdr. Had planned.
He got down to announcing when
Loading for deployment would take place. .. He even let the local press
On Base to see the c-5s and 141’s being loaded(pallets with fake loads). Airmen lined up to embark
We got to the point of having some
Other services take part in the charade.. it was a little expensive but it got funded like an ORI.. ..
We were all loaded and o.n the “hot spots” waiting for take-off orders..
a few took off to make it look good
(Ones with empty pallets prob’ly). It worked.. the town capitulated.. they even had police reserves and county sheriff deputies arrest’g, ticketing Krishnas .. for the rest of my time at Travis I never had a Krishna approach nor had other Airmen or dependents. I wonder if that Mayor ever figure he got played by the base Cmdr? The rest of the aircraft got toldcto stand down.. the “ORI deploy”was called off.. and determined a rousing success after the “alleged sit-rep” was aleviated. that was one ruse I was glad to partake . I don’t recall the expense of the “alleged ORI”..
I know the town spent money alleviating the “Krishna sit-rep”
Prob’ly not as much as the base did creating the alleged “ORI”. I wonder how that would come out under waste-fraud-abuse? I’d say kinda legit under looking after welfAre of Airmen and Families in the community. What say all of you?

Especially a direct combat branch like the Marines. Could have joined the AF, you’d still deploy, but relatively safe. Or the Coast Guard, Navy. Nothing wrong with Joining either. But if you enlist in the Army or Marines guess what, your direct combat and support, so your forward. It’s not that hard to figure out.

We had a guy go home on R&R to Puerto Rico and refused to come back. Saying his grandmother had no one to take care of her. I'm not sure whatever happened to him after the units return, but some of the troops were in contact with him on FB and he was terrified that he was going to Leavenworth for being a deserter.

We had a guy who walked away for a while (it was over 30 days, but not by much), and he was given the golden opportunity to remain. Yeah, he pissed that Second Chance away soon thereafter, and when I left the unit, he was was facing UCMJ.

There was a 1LT at JBLM that made a big stink about refusing to deploy, I don't recall the disposition. It disgusted me so much I quit following that particular story when the military didn't immediately put him in the stockade, what kind of example is that showing the troops?
When I mobilized in 2003 we had to threaten this kids grandmother that we were sending state troopers to her house to pick up her grandson on a federal warrant if he didn't show up at the drill center within 24 hours.
His parents claimed he was traveling out of the country somewhere, but one of my squad leaders had worked with him for awhile in the unit and knew better. This SSG was also a LEO, which helped when it came time to intimidate a little old lady. We found out later the kid was listening to the phone call when threatened with the federal warrant.

Look in the Uniform Code of Military Justice under Absent Without Leave (AWOL) and Desertion.

It's an open discussion chief, and I wasn't even talking about myself. Just posted the question because there are really few articles online on desertion and escaping to other countries, I chose Mexico because it is easy to get into and nearby.

Understand the discussion was open...hence my comment was directed to the hypothetical individual in question. How this idea would even cross someone's mind is beyond my comprehension.

If you're truly asking about someone else, you're duty bound to report this to your teamleader or squadleader. If you do not, you now have written proof that you're aware of a soldier's intent to dessert. You too can now be charged under UCMJ. Report him, anyone who would be willing to abandon his squad doesn't deserve any loyalty from you.

My response is: If you don't wish to deploy, why did you enlist? I mean your friend.
