I remember when I was growing up that people would rationally and calmly discuss issues amongst others, giving respect to the other individual and their opinion. Today if you state your opinion on an issue, you are immediately labeled a bigot, racist, whacko, conservative, liberal, baby killer, or gender hater.
What is it that has changed in our society to bring us to this point of intolerance and polarity??

It's a myth that we are worse off today than before.. that being divided or intolerance is some sort of new phenomenon. Let's not forget that not too long ago minorities didn't have many rights in this country, and women couldn't even vote less than a century ago. For as long as there have been divisive issues, there has been polarity. We shouldn't pretend that this is some sort of new invention by humanity. We should instead celebrate our progress and continue doing the good work that is needed.

True but our polarization is in many different directions at once as we face several key issues simultaneously. In this world of more instant gratification, How do we measure progress when one step forward doesn't seem to be enough for anyone? I have heard several comments in the media since the decision on same-sex marriage that start off with, "Well this is just the first step towards equality..." We haven't had time to let the dust settle, yet the satisfaction is gone.

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca - It's probably true that the world is changing faster now than it used to, mainly perhaps because of technology. That's only a bad thing if you have an aversion to change. I look at it as an opportunity to do more good, and right more wrongs.

The country is polarized between conservatives and liberals, Hawks and doves, and races. I trace most of this to POTUS.

I wonder what the outcome will be. I'm hoping it won't be violent but there are many of us on both sides that won't back down.

We went back decades in our development. We need to change and become more tolerate of others opinions and not say being tolerate means you must agree with others at all times.
