The same as every other service....the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. This office holder technically is the highest ranking member. For instance if Admiral Horatio Waverider is the Chairman he out ranks Admiral Fredrick Deckwalker who is the Chief of Naval Operations even though the CNO would run the day to day business.

General of the Armies of the United States. John Pershing held this rank on active duty. George Washington was awarded the rank posthumously in 1976.

General of the Armies is the highest rank ever in the United States Army. it has been given out twice. Once to George Washington and John Pershing. The Rank Directly below it is "General of the Army" which is a 5 star general and reserved for wartime use.

The highest rank in the army I believe was only reached by general George Washington as a 5 star general which could only be reached during the act of war.

Sorry PFC the highest military rank was achieved by two outstanding officers, John J. "Blackjack" Pershing, while on active duty and George Washington, posthumously.

Actually, while on active duty, it was "Lt. Gen." Geo. Washington, he was promoted after his death, (circa. 1976), by Congress to "General of the Armies of the United States" so that "Blackjack" Pershing would not "outrank" him.

General of the Armies of the United States. It's 6 stars and George Washington is the only one to hold it.

In 1976, as part of the American Bicentennial celebrations, a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress stated that "it is considered fitting and proper that no officer of the United States Army should outrank Lieutenant General George Washington". Hence, it was resolved that "the grade of General of the Armies of the United States (be) established" (a 6 star rank) and George Washington be posthumously appointed to this grade.[9]
