In World War 2 there were several. Generals of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, George C. Marshall and Henry H. "Hap" Arnold (also, later, the only General of the Air Force.) Also Fleet Admirals William Halsey, Chester Nimitz and Ernest King.

4 star, "peace" time.
5 wartime, but I'm told perishing could be regarded as a 6 star.

Just read a bit about this. In 1976, Gerald Ford promoted George Washington to the created rank of "General of the Armies of the United States," as the blurb said, so that he'd be the highest ranking officer, no matter what the situation. This blurb said that this rank was, essentially, a 6 star rank.

General of the armies. last held by Black Jack Pershing prior to him Lt. General ( highest rank at that time) U.S. Grant , and the first General George Washington. what seperates that "armies" rank is they have command over all services.

Great answers. Gen Washington certainly deserves his honor as the perpetual highest ranking officer. In today’s world the most senior Army Officer would be an Army officer serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff. The CJCS is the most senior military officer by law (Goldwater-Nichols Act).

5 Star General, General of the Armies during wartime in charge of all the Armies to include foreign Armies where deemed necessary to streamline command and to ensure success and stop the bickering about who is in charge of who. It is awarded to a single leader, the last 5 Star was General Omar Bradley he held the rank (retired if course) until his death in 1981. Not even General Norman Schwarzkopf Jr, who was in command of all US Coalition forces in the Gulf War was given a 5th Star.

Omar Bradley, as the last surviving General of the Army, was on active duty until he passed away.

Most important important rank in the Marine Corps is the Company Gunny. He separates you from staff level bullshit, he protects you from stupid Butter Bars and ambitions 1st LTs. He’s your first real level of discipline and where most bs starts or stops. Most SgtMaj are too busy with paperwork and such, so he’s really the field leader in any unit I’ve been in. You’d have to do something really really stupid or illegal to fall outside of his power to help or punish. At least back in the day, heaven knows what’s up now, hell guys fall out of runs, fail PT tests, go unk on the range. You’d never get out of PI st that rate.
