I loved that movie when it came out! I re-watched it as an adult I thought to myself "what the hell was I thinking?"

That the military is run by Nuke/war hungry generals who ONLY want to send their crack squad in, and have no time or patience for the civilian advisor/expert who clearly knows something he's not letting on. They do not appreciate the amount of hoops our higher ups will drag us through because some civilian expert said jump.

"Das Boot" was close to 100% correct. The "Malta Story" (Alec Guiness) is close to 100% accuracy as well.

Some movies were "bad" due to circumstances. The Sherman tank was still in use by many nations (as late as 1973) but sadly no Panthers or Tigers. So making a war movie in the late 60's/70's (Battle Of The Bulge) was going to be problematic when it came to German "King Tigers." Hence, using American M-48's as King Tigers in BOTB. Yet, as noted, there were enough Shermans to equip Michael "General Horrocks" Caine's Irish Guards in A Bridge Too Far. Including several rare models with the 17 pounder updated gun. Aircraft, likewise are going to be hard to come by. Such was our destruction of Japan so complete that flew flying examples of WW2 aircraft exist; let alone enough to recreate a squadron level attack. CGI didn't exist so a lot of artistic license had to be taken.
Flag Of Our Fathers uses stunning CGI to fill out the entire US Navy's Pacific Fleet at Iwo Jima and it's amazing how accurate it is. The Malta Story was made closely after WW2 so large stocks of British aircraft, ships and weapons were readily available. Hence, an entirely accurate film. From an American perspective, The Great Raid is pretty close with the only niggle being the P-61 Black Widow being portrayed by a 100% accurate Hudson. Other than that, all character clothing, weapons and tactics were 100% as performed on that historic day.

I thought that the squad bay scenes in "Full Metal Jacket" were some of the most realistic I've ever seen, based on what I remember. Everybody knows that Pyle would be sent to Motivation Platoon on the second day.

R. Lee started as an adviser on the set and when Kubrick saw him tearing into the actor who was supposed to be the DI, he gave him the role.

Some mistakes are do to budget reasons, some lack of understanding, some are for 'poetic' license... but many are just laziness on the part of the production

The B list movies on SCIFI channel. All military units will always have one hot women on the team and the leader of said team will have a beard or something like that to make him more leader like. Then there's the HQ in the movies lights everywhere and some E4 is the NCOIC of the whole thing will the commanding officer yells at everyone because he's in charge.
Then there is the robot soldiers going around killing civilians because the leadership told them to and of course dumb non-thinking soldiers just to anything their told to include killing American civilians just because.

There are certain stereotypes that must be in most military films... squad will have the hard core one, the weak/caring one, the smart one, the country/city one (sometimes both they conflict). the newbie, the seasoned...

SSG Pete Fleming - They do like to play those stereotypes pretty well. The country boy is an uncultured bumbling idiot but knows how to shoot well, but usually gets shot himself. The city kid has street smarts and usually is a former gang banger who joined the military to get a new life. He sorta knows how to at least use a weapon but still talks ghetto and acts like a bad ass he usually gets shot also. The newbie has a 5 minute stint of curling up in a little ball, but then gets a second wind of courage. The seasoned guy is your well rounded pragmatic guy figures out how to accomplish the mission and usually is of one of them to get out alive. The hard core guy usually has something to prove but acts haphazardly but gets killed, only after he's taken out 30 of the enemy in a quick swoop.
