I know that the most common (and I was always told it was an incorrect one, we were not in the British Army) is, "Carry on."

Basic and PLDC were a long time ago, but I thought the proper response was either, "As you were" or "At ease."

And yes, I did try looking it up in Customs and Courtesies, Drill and Ceremonies, and of course Google. No luck so far.

While Western civilization has from time to time used dragons to symbolize the state of China, it is an image that China itself rarely Buffet near me now makes use of. Partly that is because of the aforementioned connotation of dragons being evil and battling.

If I was an officer, I wouldn't say anything and see how long they stand there at attention just to mess with them. Humor boosts morale, haha.

I used “carry on” mostly. Depending on the situation, I said something like, “thanks, sit down.” Sometimes, “at ease.”

I was an officer and any of those responses would not be wrong in my opinion. the reply is to show you heard and are returning the Call. If you said nothing they would be stuck until an officer entered the room that outranked you. I usually said Carry on. If it was a place i would be in and out I would say something like I will be in the area all day indicating the room did not need to be called to attention every time i entered.

SIMPLE......GO TO THE POSITION OF ATTENTION.........That only impresses on lower ranks the CORRECT action to take at this command by ANY rank. Only good sense. The reason for the command may because an officer coming in may be higher than yours. Also and probably more important...JUST COMMON COURTESY.

It should always be a person Senior to those allready in the room. It is a bit of an insult to call it again for a person Jr .

Great topic Sir,

I would find out who told you it was incorrect and have them show you in the regulations and/or SOP. If you outrank them it only matters what you say, so I will just carry on but love these discussions.
