So here we are, starting to look at more presidential candidates, some more serious than others. My real question is: how many current and veteran members are associated with a political party, and how many are not, given that the president is just in fact a "figure head" and that we all know that he/ she will not be making all of the changes to this great nation? I am going to do my job in the military regardless, so how much of my time should I afford to getting to know candidates when it really all boils down to the same ordeal?

I call foul on your assertion that the President is a figurehead. He or she has duties and powers listed in the Constitution. The right to vote is also in the constitution you swore to defend. You must vote and do so as a well informed citizen. Read up on the candidates' positions on major issues. Pick the one you like--or hate the least. Exercise your right to vote!

I believe everyone should exercise their right to vote and that every voter should vote as if his/her vote would be the deciding vote for the office.

That's definitely a good way to look at it. I think I just find it difficult to sift through all the debris, but hey, theres nothing that can't be done. Thanks!

I have to wonder if the reason so many citizens these days believe, like you, that our votes are worthless and there is no way for the citizenry to affect the political landscape is because the current administration has, in fact, abused the power afforded them to circumvent the rule of law, commit and conceal wrongdoing, and enact broad sweeping policies we all know are in conflict with the will of the people?

CPT Griff Tatum - I understand because the same thoughts have jaded me. I've always been interested in history, policy, and politics, but I became even more interested after serving on the VIP suite at Walter Reed where I had the privilege of meeting some of our country's great leaders. When it became easy for me to guess a member of congress' political affiliation by observing his or her behavior, my political leanings became more solidified.
After being retired from the Army, I became involved in politics at the local level, and even held office as the Vice Chair of my party on the county level. Because of this, I was privy to many high level closed meetings at the state level, which ultimately led me to become jaded. I observed the way data analysis, demographics, and putting a spin on issues was utilized to affect the public opinion, keeping many in the dark about what was REALLY going on. Back room deals and lengthy bills designed to conceal an agenda that the majority would be averse to was a common practice I no longer wished to be a part of.
These days I take political speeches with a grain of salt and make every attempt to read proposed legislation on my own and do what I can to ensure others are aware of the fine print.
As a military member you're prohibited from officially endorsing candidates in an election, but when the time comes, perhaps you, too, can do your own research by getting involved during an election. It's much easier than you think to become part of the inner circle! I'm sure you'd be able to find political clubs near you, which is how I got started. Additionally, Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians near you probably establish a party headquarters during the election season at the county and state levels. Voters can visit the headquarters, volunteer, and pick up things like literature, yard signs, and bumper stickers. I don't know of any candidate that would decline help from a volunteer! They need help with everything from manning the headquarters, putting up large signs, and knocking on doors to walking and waving signs in parades and showing up for rallies.
We need more young people to get involved and educate others about the truth, I'd encourage you to seek it, LT!
