They're impossible to escape: those words or sayings that you would never hear outside of the military, were once cool or at least tolerable, but now you just can't stand them. Whether it be slang, a saying, an insult, or a cadence, most everyone has one that just makes them cringe. What are yours??? Also, if you know the origins of others' annoying words or phrases, please reply to their comments!

I have three in particular:

1) 100-Mile-an-Hour Tape (You mean duct tape?...)

2) Hardball Road (I don't know if you're referring to that paved road over there or just a confrontational course of action)

3) "More messed up than a soup sandwich" (It was funny the first time I heard it, novel the second time, and annoying every time after)

The saying that I probably hate the most is "because we've always done it that way."

If I had a nickel every time I heard that phrase in the corporate world, I’d be a millionaire today.
Usually you hear that phrase from grunts who take no ownership in their jobs.

One I was forced to use: "Yes its now obsolete and no longer applicable, but if you want to graduate this course, you better know about it, because it will be on the test." C&GS 88-92

In the real Army...
I've been all over the place, and I have never found that elusive "Real Army." It must be Back At Bragg.

Before I retired after working on a 3 Star I hated during briefs people would use the phrase "as a caveat" wrong! I would sit there and think to myself "You keep using that word, but it doesn't mean what you think it means"
