They're impossible to escape: those words or sayings that you would never hear outside of the military, were once cool or at least tolerable, but now you just can't stand them. Whether it be slang, a saying, an insult, or a cadence, most everyone has one that just makes them cringe. What are yours??? Also, if you know the origins of others' annoying words or phrases, please reply to their comments!

I have three in particular:

1) 100-Mile-an-Hour Tape (You mean duct tape?...)

2) Hardball Road (I don't know if you're referring to that paved road over there or just a confrontational course of action)

3) "More messed up than a soup sandwich" (It was funny the first time I heard it, novel the second time, and annoying every time after)

The saying that I probably hate the most is "because we've always done it that way."

1SG Steven Stankovich that phrase and it's sibling, "thats just the way it's done," are two of the most dangerous phrases in the English language.

After "hold mah beer" of course.

HOOAH. I hate it. Lately, I've also heard Soldiers using the word socialize incorrectly and it's rather annoying. If someone asks them a question and they aren't sure, instead of saying "I'll get an answer to that" they say "I'll socialize that with so-and-so".

Like many things it was actually kind of cool and had meaning. Until the mid to late 90s when it became just plain stupid.

Socialize is not a hard word to understand how to use properly...
But sometimes I use big words I don't really understand so I can sound more photosynthesis.

In the real Army...
I've been all over the place, and I have never found that elusive "Real Army." It must be Back At Bragg.

SGT (Join to see) - Depending on context that makes sense. The bigger, normal, "everyday" Army compared to the smaller SOCOM units. Outside of that however it's meaningless.

Ah, see that's your problem right there. You can't search for the "Real Army", it can only be found once you leave it. You won't know when you're in the Real Army, but the moment you end up at a TDA unit or a garrison/sustainment unit you find that wherever you left was "real" whereas this is "pretend".
Source: Anecdotal only. Just got stationed at West Point 8 months ago and I have realized that the 173rd was "The Real Army" and this place is a pale imitation.

When I'm in a joint unit we all say "in the real Army" or "real Air Force" or "real Navy." A CMSgt told us in a NCO meeting he doesn't like when people say that. Say "in a traditional unit..."

Let's be honest - anyone in a joint unit knows that it's a completely different world than "traditional" units.
