My wife of 27 years chose to be with me and have a family. We have had our trials and tribulations but we are we. Today is my son's birthday and he is and will always be my gift. Love you Brandon happy 26th birthday.

I lost my father at 7, and my uncles tried to step in to help mold my younger brother and I, from time to time, but they didn't live near us and still had their families to raise. My mother, while receiving SSI, had to find a job that paid in cash as she was limited to less than $900.00 a month in income or she would lose what my father earned. She started bartending at the local VFW, after a few years she bought the building the VFW and Canteen were located. On a Saturday afternoon in May, of my 9th year, before Memorial Day my brother and I showed up to help clean rifles for the upcoming ceremony. On this day a Retired SGM Jefferson Davis (J.D.) Pratt, USA, Inf. Ft. Stewart, would meet my brother and I. He asked permission from my mother to mentor both of us. J.D. started with teaching us small engine repair (lawnmowers, dirt bikes, go-carts, ATVs, etc...) as he owned a car repair shop and many other businesses in the community. J.D. Pratt had three sons and he would be our dad too. The life lessons he instilled in two little boys in South Georgia, I can use still today. I stand in awe of what J.D. Pratt didn't have to do as he taught two white looking children how to be men, BTW J.D. Pratt is a Fine Southern Gentleman that happened to be born in Nicholls, Ga in the 1930s as a Black male. There is proof that it takes a village to raise any child and as well you will never know the impact you have on others until you see it in their eyes. I Love you J.D. for showing me how a man is supposed to love and how to love others no matter your circumstance. We buried Mr. Pratt in 2003, in a field outside of town on a hill under an oak tree, so he can watch all he built, all three of his sons, my brother and I were pallbearers in his funeral. One of the greatest honors and saddest moments of my life.

When my mom died I was about 23, just out of the Navy, I was totally lost, depressed and didn't know where to turn. A bunch of my Navy buddies contacted me and assured me that it would be better as time went on. My Dad was still alive, WWII vet Marine wounded on Gaudacanal, married over 40 yrs& he said time heals all things. Even so, although that was back in the 80s and I am in my 60s now, with COPD I still find comfort in those words. Still miss them badly to this day after this long.

The most thoughtful thing that someone has done for me is when my sister-in-law and her sister came to the emergency room to be with me, and they stayed for hours with me because I had no other family member that could've stayed with me, they helped me walk to the restroom, drove me home and stayed with me awhile before they left. I will never forget those angels.

Fed me when my husband died from stage 4 small cell cancer, I didn’t have income to buy food, waiting from 10/21/21- until present day for v. a. Benefits she continues to feed me a plate of food each day, sometimes it’s the only meal I recieve. So I am so blessed & greatgul for my neighbor.I Pat my rent & utilities but theirs never anything left over for food, only time it’s bad is on holidays or her vacations when she visits her family. Those are the times I fast and am lonely. Missing my husband until this very moment. But thankfully I found food banks that help me get thru now on some level. God Bless all those volunteers.

This didn't specify only during our military life so; I was adopted at 13 years old by the family who raised me as a foster child since I was 5 years old.

This past fall, both my wife's and my vehicle broke down. A local used car dealer loaned us a vehicle and helped us get repairs on her care. This allowed us the breathing space we needed to get things worked out. I later bought the loaner from him, but it was at least 3 weeks before I could do that.

One of my friends put my name in at a radio station to try and get me help when I couldn't afford a knee surgery and the VA wouldn't help me.
