My favorite part of my Army experience was: having my fellow soldiers feel like my family. But mainly, I loved being a leader. Being a good example for others to follow.

SPC Margaret Higgins I had two really great experiences in the military. First, was living and working at Chievres AFB, Belgium and traveling all over Europe for 3 years from 1977 to 1980. Awesome assignment for a 19, 20, and 21-year-old soldier just married for the first time. Got to bring my parents over to see all of Europe. The Second was traveling to Nicaragua after Hurricane Mitch and providing medical treatment to the villages along the river that went from a few feet to a mile. Very exciting trip to South America and one of many!

All I can say, COL Mikel Burroughs, is THANK YOU, and CONGRATULATIONS to ALL of YOU.
HOW BEYOND TRAGIC is the fact that some of the remote villages lost over 50% to 60% of their inhabitants. HOW I pray for them in Heaven.

Helping train the Peshmerga that is putting in work against Isis right now. I was deployed in 2010-2011 for the end of OIF and the start of OND, training those guys was a privilege; and, it's an honor to see that they continue our efforts in defending the people and taking back their land.

The favorite part of my military experience so far had to be AIT out in Fort Huachuca. It was roughly five months of roaming the mountains, learning the job, and having a lot of good friends around you. While there, I was able to do a lot of things including volunteer for the food bank on base and compete for the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. The best thing I did there though was volunteer for airborne and Ranger follow on training. Once at airborne school, I was not able to go to RASP due to the regiment being over strength on my MOS, but I have loved the airborne lifestyle ever since.

SPC (P) Samuel Coronado, That must have been infinite fun!!! Good for you for volunteering for the food bank on base. Competing for the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge must have been really Something! I don't blame you for loving the airborne lifestyle. It must be hugely challenging.

This might sound stupid to some, but my favorite military experience was OIF I.

Pathfinder School was some of the most mind-numbing weeks I have served, but with great reward. Family has to put up with you for weeks on end of you only wanting to study and pass the next 24 hour period, just to do it all over again on a new section of material. Once again, great personal reward and satisfaction pinning that torch on, knowing you did, and you alone.

That one great squadron that I was assigned to during my first enlistment that I spent the next 17 years trying to duplicate but failed. Everyone should have that one great assignment.

Well, Margaret, it's been 13 years since I saluted my last OOD. I've dabbled in some temporary hobby jobs, but we moved to the country in '12, and now I dabble in a hobby farm...and it's more work than I ever imagine. It's taken a bit of a physical toll, but I wouldn't change the peace and quiet for anything man-made!!! My wife and are somewhat free to travel in the off months, and we do that as much as we can. It's hard to imagine that it was 46 years ago when I first enlisted. The end result has certainly been worth it. And thanks for asking, and thank you for your service to our nation.
