What should I expect while assigned to a Soldier Recovery Unit?

Long story short, PCM was wrong and medical director here told me I do meet the criteria for an MEB and will likely get 100% from the VA. In the meantime, he wants to send me to the Fort Bragg SRU while my MEB processes. Does anyone know anything about the SRU?

Formerly known as the Warrior Transition Unit, the SRU is a designated unit for Soldiers to focus on treatment while awaiting MEB or recovery. Most of the time Soldiers are medically discharged but some recover, returning to duty and (a very few) request a MAR 2-allowing you to stay in under a different MOS depending on your disability. While at the SRU, the focus is medical treatment/appointments but also work on completing SFL-TAP and career skills to prepare Soldiers to transition to the civilian sector.

Thank you for the response ma’am. A Mar-2 isn’t exactly an option for me since I’m in one of the least physically demanding MOS. Didn’t exactly know what the daily life was like. I was told I would be there no longer than 270 days while processing out

If you haven't already pursued a second opinion I would recommend it. I discovered during my MEB journey very few people in Military Medicine know everything they brag they know in regards to med boards, VA medical care and everything in between. The amount of misinformation and outright false data I was given along the way was staggering. If you are incapable or unable to perform due to your medical issues push for the limited duty status which generally will push you into MEB by default. Refusing you a medboard but forcing you out on medical grounds is unethical on their part as they are acknowledging you have medical issues but someone is making a personal choice to disagree with you getting boarded for it. I ran into the same issues during my process because my injuries weren't combat related and because I wasn't missing any pieces or that I didn't have a serious illness such as cancer. I spent 18 months on limdu ,the board took 6 months and the entire time I was told I wouldn't be retired but I would be forced out due to medical issues. Eventually common sense prevailed. Good luck.

The PCM didn’t know my history because he didn’t bother looking at my medical records.
The medical director of the hospital looked at my records and spoke to my surgeon before calling me and telling me that my condition will likely result in medical retirement. There’s nothing anyone can do about the scar tissue surrounding my nerve.

SSG (Join to see) - Ok, as long as they are moving forward with the MEB and getting everything rolling. So many providers told me how the med board process works and blah blah blah and many of them couldn't have been further from the truth. But if you are getting routed for the MEB hopefully you don't get stuck in LIMDU purgatory waiting for a package to get sent to the board.

What ever happens do not let them send you to Ft.Drum for your transition.
My V.A. Package was run down at Bragg. All I can say is I am glad they did it.
Theses units are supposed to set you up for the outside, And transition to geting a job.
All I can tell you is you pretty much have to keep on that stuff your self.
At least that is how it was at Ft.Drum ten years ago. For the most part the cadre was the people that there unit's wanted to get rid of.
I hope is has gotten better, I think it would be at Bragg.
Do not let them send you to contact medical for your evaluation's. They are paid not to find your injurie's. That is just what I have seen in the past.
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL YOUR RECORDS AND AWARDS IN ORDER.
If not it is impossible to get them fixed. Get them in order befor you leave your unit

Nobody can say for sure what your ratings may be until the VA actually does their work. I have heard this several times before and it can be a let down when/if it doesn’t workout.

An SRU is a place where your full time job is to get medical treatment. It's the very best choice if you qualify for it. You have only one job, and that job is get treatment, go to medical appointments, and process your MEB without any distractions or other work duties.

Don't know about Bragg. I spent my last 6 weeks active at Ft. Ord, as it was being shut down, in the SLL(Sick, lame, lazy) company. A morning formation for accountability, then go do what ever work or appt's for that day. Had I known then, what I know now, I'd have spent more time at the clinic getting things in my records other than the problem that got me boarded.

When I was in (got out in 1999 Cot) I to was set to another post during my MEB. When I go to the new post they ask me what I was doing there? You are not suppose to be transfer to a new post if you have stated an MEB.

SRU underwent a pretty significant TDA change and don't take active MEBs without extenuating circumstances. But you can expect to be assigned a case manager you will report to who will give you all your appts and work whatever referrals they think you need.

And there isn’t a neurosurgeon within an hour and a half from me so they want me where I can get everything at the same place

SSG (Join to see) sounds like you fall into the extenuating circumstances category. Good luck in your process.
