Doesn't matter if you agree with this move or not - it's been directed and it's happening. What are your suggestions for renaming the following bases?

- Fort Bragg
- Fort Rucker
- Fort Benning
- Fort Gordon
- Fort Hood
- Fort Polk
- Fort A.P. Hill
- Fort Belvoir
- Fort Lee
- Fort Pickett

Must have done something outstanding during his tenure in service. I think it was a good thing to have done.

You would be well-advised to grow a sense of humor, CPT Chris McGowan, before your hot-headed demeanor gets you in trouble.
Let's clarify a couple of facts for you, sir:
1) My father happens to be a permanent resident at the national cemetery established on what had been the Lee family plantation, as is my mother and numerous other family members. If you're unfamiliar with that description, try Googling "Lee mansion". You may learn something.
2) I learned history from a multitude of sources, including 3 years spent as a full-time student majoring in history at the Fullerton campus of the California State University. If you believe that the faculty in the History Department there is overrun with white supremacists or fools, I suggest you share your suspicions with the department head.
3) If the Confederate officers were guilty of treason, why were none of them charged with that offense? For that matter, can you find any legal authority from that time which explicitly denies legality of states seceding from the United States?
4) If you think that the Northern states fought the Civil War to end slavery, consider the wording on this plaque at the base of a memorial statue which I pass daily in the state capitol of Maine:

I mentioned my ancestors who are buried at Arlington National Cemetery solely because you explicitly mentioned one of them in your ad hominem diatribe. And in a way that would give you some insight into how personally forgiving the government of the United States was feeling towards the defeated Confederate leadership.
If you want to actually learn a little about the legal nuances of secession, I strongly suggest you learn the details of how West Virginia became a state, including the legislative actions in both Richmond and the District of Columbia that empowered the populist efforts.
Regarding that course in logic, let me know when you've passed one. Perhaps then you'll be able to demonstrate how to use language more like a rapier and less like a bludgeon.
Until then, have a nice day, CPT Chris McGowan.

SPC (Join to see) has a great list. Wouldn’t object to any of his suggestions. I’ll add a few of my own
Ft Bragg to Ft Pope. Pope was a union general

Ft Lee to Ft Ann Dunwoody. GEN Dunwoody was the first Army female O-10 and a great logistician.
Ft Hood to Ft George Patton. GEN Patton was one of the greatest Armor commanders ever.
Ft Rucker to Ft H H Arnold. Gen Hap Arnold is widely regarded As the father of modern military aviation. Served As first commander of Army Air Force.

Being directed does not make it a done deal, or that a change in mission may be needed to achieve victory. This is our history. So much Blood, Sweat, and Tears has been lost to defend our freedom. Those soldiers that shed those Blood, Sweat, and Tears were from every Color, Faith, and Ideology in the world bound together with an oath to defend this Nation and it's Constitution. Even in side our ranks there were many victories that caused us as soldiers to recognize the changes needed to bring equality to our family. It is a disgrace to our Nation The United States Of America to bend a knee to this woke ideology. The last election demands this dishonor to our heritage be stopped. These names show the world how far our Nation has come from a dark past to a bright future together all as one people able to overcome.

I know this comment is late to the game, but I offer it just the same...

First, I find it suspect that the Democrat Party is now eager to whitewash a history that they were so proud to commemorate (most of these forts were named during the Wilson and FDR administrations) as part of their "Noble Lost Cause" historical revision narrative some five generations ago.

Second, I am not in favor of changing names of facilities that have been so christened for the past 100 or 80 odd years. Doing so erases the proud heritage and past memories these sites have earned independent of their sullied namesakes.

Third, if we ignore abhorrent politics of those namesakes, their battlefield exploits remain worthy of emulation. I recall the halls of Bundeswehr tankers with murals commemorating the exploits of their World War II tank aces -- including Waffen SS. They did so to emulate their battlefield performance, not their political leanings.

General Lee, for example, was one of only six cadets in his class to complete the United States Military Academy at West Point without accruing a single demerit. His service to the United States before and after the Civil War proved honorable. Should we also erase any study of his tactical and operational performance to prepare our present and future leaders along with his name just because he fought to defend slavery?

Fourth, if we must erase these names and replace them with the names of others, then I would prefer we chose names of general officers from the Union side and after... preferably names we can actually pronounce and which best suit the prime mission of those forts based on the like contributions of their new namesakes. For example, the best new moniker for Fort Hood would be Fort Patton. Benning easily swaps to Bradley; Gordon to Myer; Bragg to Gavin or Ridgeway; Lee to McNair or Somervell; and Belvoir to Gross.

And at this point we must stop "cancelling" historic figures because of a fallacious strain of "Presentism" -- judging people and things from the past based on our present day moral standards. Perhaps we should all do well to adopt Lee's vision of forbearance as the hallmark of a Gentleman (and a Lady) before we continue this constant "cancelling" of the imperfect people who helped -- in one fashion or another -- establish the greatest nation on the planet:

“ The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman.

The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly--the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the men in a plain light.

The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. A true man of honor feels humbled when he cannot help humbling others.”

Great military leaders are just that. These bases are named after commanders of some esteem, no matter which army

My suggestion is to leave the military alone. Our history is our history, warts & all! The U.S. Armed Forces are among the last that our citizens have unwavering respect & support. Do NOT do anything to politicize or anything else that weakens this important bastion of our nation!

They need to leave well enough alone. It will not stop with just these Army posts being renamed. This is plain outright political B.S.
Just like where they have taken down statues up north of Christopher Columbus, have renamed a number of middle and high schools where I live, trying to get the name of Jacksonville, FL changed. On the grounds it was named after a Confederate President. FYI, it was named after Andrew Jackson wha was a U.S. president.
But like the saying goes, " those that fail to study history are bound to repeat it". Tearing down monuments and statues of Confederate generals, renaming Army Posts, the Navy renaming a ship named after someone that was French, along with all the power idiocy that the left comes up with. Well.............
