Okay so what I am specifically looking for is, what uniform am I entitled to wear? The obsolete dress greens from when I first started? The Obsolete Dress blues that were used at the time of my discharge, or the current Army Brown Uniform?

Within that uniform what unit patch should I wear? The old 81st SAB patch or the new Indian head (2nd ID) patch that is currently authorized for the unit?

Further, it doesn't matter if one is a retired combat Vet, or a retired peacetime vet. Unless it's a medical retirement, I don't envision too many SPC (E-4) retirees. As for me (not retired), I wouldn't mind being buried in my old Dress Greens, BUT I can't even get my arms into the sleeves anymore! I've done a lot of heavy work since my Navy/Marine and Army days, and NONE of those three uniforms fit although they were all for the same size, "back when!" So, I'll settle for blue jeans and a decent colared shirt. LOL

SSG Bill McCoy AR 670-1 has a special provision for former soldiers (not retired) who served in wartime to wear a dress uniform at appropriate events. The AR is undergirded by federal law.

1SG Dennis Hicks - To be completely honest 1SG, the only time I will don the service uniform again is when I am in a box, and yes, the cord and discs will be upon my uniform, someone wants call me out on it, go right ahead, I won't care cuz I am dead 8 )

SSG Robert Perrotto - I thought that as well but certain ceremonies have me playing dress up and I want to be correct, If I am hurried it won't be in Dress uniform, maybe just Helmet LBE and boots just for shock value :) On a side note nobody would say a damn thing at funeral. hell I saw a Buck SGT being buried by his family wearing MSG rank and assorted bling he didn't earn, but I would never cause that kind of crap for a grieving family.

1SG Dennis Hicks - According to my DD 214 I am entitled to wear the "distinctive infantry emblems" or something to that effect. I take this to mean the blue cord and disks.

However, I did not serve in combat as an infantryman, and as such I would not wear them anyway. I would, instead wear the organizational stetson, I ended my career as a Cav Scout.

The issue I am really having is that my old Greens do not fit, and i was never issued blues in the guard. So, i either need to try and find a second hand green uniform or purchase a new one. I am at an age now where I am going to be losing friends. It started this week. Lost a close friend he was 51. Stroke. It sucked.

Being in the Guard, is a little different than Active. 80% of the guys i served with are within my area, and I will be able to attend their funerals. It only seems right to attend it in uniform.

Yes to all of the above, you are not obligated to purchase the new brown uniform.

But what if you either no longer have your greens/blues or are too fat to wear it?

Well you didn't mention that part, so you can try looking for the Greens in Army Surplus. The blues are still available, maybe cheaper than the browns, I don't know that one. As the blues were issued to enlisted soldiers you may find them for a steal in your size or close to your size. Last resort is going brown.

Well, for me if i still fit my greens, I would wear them. I have them. But the blues are more expensive than the brown uniform i think, which is why I was asking.

I was never issued blues, nor have i purchased them. They are expensive.
