This morning I got to sleep in until 0830 and when I went outside for my morning breath of fresh air I head something different than I had heard any other day. While I am used to hearing the rifle fire from the range I live close to they added something new to me this morning, I got to hear the National Anthem. Automatic reaction was to stand an salute drawing strange looks from the only other individual outside at that time, he is not a veteran and asked me what I was doing.

Understanding his confusion I offered this explanation; "Rendering honors to those who founded this country, those who have and are serving this country, and remembering those who have died protecting this country.

Our big gas grill sits right outside the door to the deck and we leave the steel door open but lock the storm door. A pair of Robins beat us to the grill this year by building a nest and laying eggs. There are now baby birds and when we know both Mom & Dad Robin are out gathering worms we'll sneak a look but never touch anything inside.

Yeah, I could have prevented this but didn't have the heart to tear out the nest while it was under construction. The few times we have raised the lid a little we see 5 or 6 wide open mouths, waiting on a fresh worm.

It was a noisy breakfast this morning. Mom and Dad were both in there so the last worm must have been given out. The whole family was practicing singing lessons (apparently). Not a bad sound to hear at 7 AM.
They quieted down when they heard me in the kitchen fixing sausage and biscuits ( and gravy) for OUR breakfast before leaving for church. I should get the use of my grill back soon, flying lessons can't be far away!

Well he wasn't scream, he walked over to me, poked me gently in the chest and asked if I could get him a juice box.

LCpl Mark Lefler gotta love moments like that. Treasure them while they happen and savor the memories later as they continue to grow.

I voted birds. Because my phone is set to "Ducks Quacking" Alarm at 4:40. I ran the Frederick Marathon with my wife this morning.

You'd be surprised how hard it is to sleep through quacking, as compared to all the other alarm settings.

Every morning at 0600, I have the pleasure of hearing reveille, at 1745, retreat and at 2200, I end the day with taps. I live close enough to the installation I can hear each of these, even with the windows closed. A reminder each day as to why I wore the uniform for 20+ years.

First of all KUDOS to your response and for educating the individual in a professional manner. You set the example everyone should follow! As for what I heard this morning....well I never went to bed as I was up all night typing a grad school paper. UGH!!!
