I am currently on my 3rd deployment in six years and have seen many different FOBs, COPs, and Air Fields. Each of them has provide some great memories and some not so great memories. For me… the more austere the better. FOB Zangabad, 30 miles west of Kandahar Afghanistan was my favorite along with it's surrounding out posts. Which was your favorite and why?

Through all of my deployments and travels; it doesn't matter where; the MWR tent and the PX were my favorite locations.

I always splurged and grabbed a Whopper at the "local BK" once a deployment! LMAO Reminder of Stateside!

Actually Iraq where while moving from Kuwait to Mosul with the 101, it was living out of my chinook for 39 days! If I had to choose a physical location, Kandahar January 2002!

Thanks for sharing Chief. I was working near Kandahar during that same time out to the west in the Horn of Panjuwei. The boardwalk at Kandahar was a nice treat whenever I was able to come in for a few days.

Zaragoza Spain!
My RCP conducted a Multi National partnership instructing their Route Clearance Patrols and showing them some of our TTPs. Which was the first time in 30 years the American Army and Spanish Army partnered for training.

Sounds like an interesting opportunity. A good chance to practice some of the High School Spanish we have all forgotten. I would love an opportunity to visit Spain some day!

I am on my first deployment, and I was lucky enough to be able to travel the country and visit many FOBs and outstations. Out of all of them though, Herat was by far my favorite location. Meeting and working with our Italian counterparts was an experience that I will never forget.

PFC Marquart, sound like you are having a deployment to remember. I am glad that you have had the opportunity to work with Soldiers from another nation and see that we are in this together. Thanks for sharing!

Always fun to get to work with allied nations. Just to see how they run things (sometimes good, sometimes not so much) is an interesting experience.

The Main FOB (for the unit) where the PX/Green Beans/Unit Supply, was located. But only for a visit, anything longer than a few days might get you ECP Guard or LN escort duties.

I would say that FOB Blackhorse (West side of Kabul) in AFG
was the best of the three deployments that I have had. We would satellite out
to different COP's near Lake Sarobie working and seeing the river valleys and
natural springs in the middle of nowhere.
Working with different forces and not being ISAF. I am not knocking ISAF.

Well I didn't want to tell everyone about our little slice of heaven here. I mean hunting, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, camping and hiking

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The mission was exhilarating and absolutly mind numbing at the same time, and the potential for your Soldiers to get into trouble was through the roof.(authorized Alcohol) But the MWR opportunities were unheard of, and the living conditions were better than some state side quarters. Being able to rent a boat and take some Soldiers out on the water to unwind and let loose just cant be beat. And catching a once in a lifetime fish, a 43" barracuda... priceless.

1SG…. I have heard that GB is a great deployment with scuba diving and many other MWR opportunities. Thanks for sharing!

CSM Poll,
Wow, not many people even remember the riots in 94. You are in for a big change since then.
Change is definitely constant because there was no position for a reserve CSM when I left there just over a year ago. I understand that the active component is passing more of their role over to the Reserves.
Please PM me. I'd love to stay up to date on things down there. I may end up going back.
CPT O,
Yes the staff folks had plenty of time to get SCUBA certified. Us shift workers, not so much.

Camp Taji, Iraq because it is the only deployed place I have been to that had a Taco Bell. I thought that was awesome. I heard rumor when I was down at Kandahar in '05 that up at Bagram they had a Dairy Queen. Never got to go see for myself though.

My first deployment was to Camp Taji on '08-'09. I remember that food court well! I am currently spending time in both Kuwait and Bagram, and there in son Dairy Queen there now.

Sir, I was there the same time frame as you with 12th CAB. I am currently at Shindand, Afghanistan and there is nothing but a chow hall and a green bean. Very expeditionary these days, but I am having the time of my life in this job with these Soldiers. I make light, but deployments aren't about food for me. Taji was also my favorite due to the mission sets and the Soldiers I worked with. That is what makes or breaks a deployment for me.

1SG, I was with 4th CAB then. We replaced you all at Taji. I was with 3-4 Avn, the Blackhawk BN. My second I was with a Stryker infantry BN out of Alaska and we went to Zangabad out west of Kandahar. We had nothing but a chow hall there. As much as I like the comforts of the big FOBs, I have grown to love the intimacy of the smaller ones better.

As Seabees, we have what we call "green deployments", to places like Guam, Spain, Okinawa, etc. But, to be completely honest, Iraq was probably my favorite deployment site, since it is most like home (El Paso, Tx, for those of you that have been/are stationed at Ft. Bliss). Not "where I am stationed"-home, like, "home of record"-home. When i told my wife that, she wigged out for a second until I explained.
"Honey, Iraq is just like El Paso. It's hot, dry and dusty here, and it's hot, dry and dusty there. There are a lot of little scrubby grasses and weeds here, and there are a lot of little scrubby grasses and weeds there. There are a bunch of dark-skinned people that don't speak English here. . . and a bunch of darker-skinned people that don't speak English there. . .See, baby? It's just like home!"
