A lot of veterans find it repulsive that people say "Happy Memorial Day" as if it is supposed to be enjoyed instead of taking time to honor the dead. What word would you use instead?

I've lost many people, some of them veterans. My life is fuller because of them. Not one of them would want me to walk around sad, wallowing in grief to "honor" them. Happy memories honor them. I don't have much time for people that look for offense where none was intended. So, have a HAPPY Memorial Day.

CPO Arthur Weinberger - According to Ms. Costos, proper grief and gratitude doesn't include "enjoying" the day with friends (some of whom are vets) and family (some of whom are vets). I don't see why enjoying the day, and remembrance and gratitude, are mutually exclusive.

Americans have become so selfish and short-sighted that they cannot grasp (much less appreciate) the importance of honoring fallen soldiers. The military industrial complex wants us to forget about the lives lost and focus instead on new technology that is always just a few billion dollars around the corner.

CW2 John Yumanski - Huh? Your flying in circles to rarefied for me. I live in a small community. Combined population of the village and township is about 2300. I'm not aware of a single local who is not related to one of the war dead (If you go back to the war of 1812 there are 63 war dead in the cemetery)
It is a personal day, we don't give a thought to things like the military-industrial complex. We have an appropriate ceremony of remembrance and thanks. Then it is on to a community potluck to celebrate the gift the war dead purchased for us. I don't have the time of day for one who expects me or others to go "sack cloth and ashes."
