Navy's top enlisted leader is wrapping up job title review. Intent is to remove "man" from job titles, such as corpsman, to make them gender neutral. All Air Force members are referred to as "airmen" and three enlisted ranks include "man" in their title. What would you suggest as an alternative to "airman"? (You can have fun with this, but serious alternatives also are appreciated.)

I still remember when the Navy decided to do away with Shipmate. They say it was a derogatory term. I was with some prior service buddy's and we came to a consensus. The military has become soft. This all inclusive, participation awards military is becoming ridiculous to say the least.

They started to go soft when they took away the term Drill Sergeant, and also when parents crying to congress and senators about there kids being treated badly. For Gods sake people they are training for war not summer camp!

Get ready to gouge your eyes out in disbelief after you read this. I was an Navy instructor for 4 years and I was warned for saying the words "you guys" in a group that contained women. Oh but wait it gets worse. I cursed during one of the Unit Mobilization Evaluations and was verbally reprimanded for doing so. I was told I could not curse at people because it was not professional. My response was, "Are you kidding me, I did not curse at anyone but I did tell them they needed to hurry the F up when they were being attacked." Reminds me of the South Park episode with PC Principal.

There isn't an alternative in my world.
The half dozen persons that get butt hurt over being called an "Airman" should consider an alternative career choice outside of the military.

I am female and I AM an Airmen or Airman... This term is what I would prefer to be called. During WWII all members of the Air Corp were called Airmen regardless of their rank... I prefer it all to stay the same way...

During WW2, it was the Army Air Corps and the lower ranking members were called Private, Private First Class and Corporal.

SGT Eliyahu Rooff - Actually the Air Corp is a branch of the Army Air Corp. You can find this information on http://www.afhso.af.mil/ website. You can find a lot of documentation of what the Airmen did in the Army via this website. In addition, how it came to separate from the Army. Although rank does have its part - when you hear the term they are not talking rank - such as, Tuskegee Airmen.
Regardless who is correct - I still feel the same way.

I'm sorry but I don't think there is a gender neutral term.......Airman. It is all encompassing. Lets stop with the PC crap already.

This whole pc bs has no place in the military. Because of a few groups who think that they want to be trendsetters history needs to be changed. I disagree with all of it and it should stay as it is in all services. Screw pc just get the job done.

Oh, but "personkind" has the male child name, son, in it. Shouldn't it be perchildkind to be totally ridiculously PC?

Airman, Seaman, Fireman, Corpsman, and etc. are just titles, and this political correctness is starting to go a bit far. Should we start referring to ourselves has Homo Sapiens, male/female, just to avoid offending the delicate sensibilities of someone who doesn't have the sense of mind or strength of character to understand and accept that it is just a title and doesn't define us as a woman or a man. Leave the job titles alone.
