As for max days, you can expend all of your accrued leave plus whatever you'd earn while on that leave.
When to turn in the leave request will depend on local policy, but in my experience most units and posts simply make it part of the out processing checklist. Your chain-of-command should provide the checklist and counseling about six months out so you can plan appointments and the like with your FLL.

I agree with 1SG, it is you leave take charge of it, bc other people do not care about you leave and can possibly go out of they way to disrupt your ETS smooth transiation ! Maybe my story can show you how important takeing charge of you ets and transition leave !
I was in a unit that decide to stop monthly counseling me 15 months out from my leave date ! So when time for transistion packet to be turned in leadership says ooo didnt know ? I put my packet togther and when went to turn in to s1 , was told by a sgt in my platoon he had to help me bc i was an e-4 an e-4 not allowed to turn in anything with out an nco. Nco approaved but held my paper qork for 25 days. Was given back my packet and told to get required platoon signatures. Final platoon signature was platoon commander. Turned in to him after his signature and told me to find an nco to turn in to ... Platoon ncos keep laughing in my face turn in to who monthly counsels you ! Had to end up using 1sg open door policy to get packet to company ... That took another 20 days ... Platoon sgt miss informed 1Sg that i was frustrated with amount of leave days i was allowed to take. Informed 1sg i was approaved for all transition leave days , just that platoon refused to forward completed approaved packet !... 1sg said we need more time for me to clear so pushed back my transition leave date a few days ... Platoon sgt said i got a meeting to go to 1sg and left... Than a sgt from platoon was at company and pass by 1sg door and said i can do his new da 31 ! Sgt messed up paperwork forged commanders signature and forwarded to battalion commander to approave with out company commsnder to see da 31. Sgm kicked it back to company saying company approaves transistion ets leave ! Company commander sees paperwork he had never seen before sighned wit his signature in supervisior section and gets pissed ! & refuses to move forward wit paperwork unitl sgt confesses ... Sgt never confessed , so never got transistion leave ! So when etsed had to sell 60 days leave and another 45 was left unused and unpaided... No transtion leave.....

So yes get yu packet checklist ! Complete it, double check you work, and make copies copies copies ! Ets is an honored tradition , do it right , transition in to civlian education ' and enjoy the memories and honerabilty that it was to serve you country and wore uniform wit honor !!!!#

CPL Any Jim - Wait.
You accumulated 105 days of leave that went unused?
That is nearly impossible to do.

I am disappointed to hear your story about how you were handled during transition, and I want you to know that is NOT how the vast majority of Sr NCOs handle their troops, short or not. My Soldiers were my Soldiers until the day they signed out, and even then, I still would answer my phone for any of them.

Yes the unfortunate thing for me i was in a consolodated maitiance motorpool company! So were the maintance company in ie. For example a engineer battalion or aviation battalion and the senior ncos felt like they were the bastards negelected orphan in the battalion ! Wasnt the case but that was they battel cry ... An unfourtunaly i was a radio repairer in a maintance company /motorpool and the issue i kept running into was e4 was usually highest rank for radio repair in motorpool ! Was never an radio repair e5 or higher ! One of my coworkers had 765 promotion points but need 798 to get promoted ..... So senior ncos wouldnt let him counsel us bc he wasnt a e5 and they refused to make him atleast corpal so he could do nco duties ! So we would have to report and be counseled by an nco of another mos that was promoted to e5 at 350 points. But thats how senior ncos of consolidated motor pool function that yu are nco of army not nco of an mos and e4 or belows are of no concern unless they a 91 bravo ....

Knowing Fort Drum, definitely have your team leader, squad leader, PSG, and 1SG engage your BN leadership to ensure what policies are in place in your respective BN and BDE. Be proactive in the process, ask questions, and expect answers. Your leadership is there for a reason. Utilize them as they have used their leaders in the past.

Here on Bragg, at my unit, ETS packets are accepted 180 days/6 months out from ETS or Terminal Leave date. Take however many days of leave you will have at ETS, and then subtract those days on the calendar, which will give you your potential Terminal Leave date. Then go back 6 months from that date for when you can turn in your ETS packet. The sooner the better, and make copies of everything you intend to submit... just in case.
