This is precisely the reason I do not as a general rule wear anything that is veteran or military related. I also do not confront posers because simply put, what they are wearing isn't a good enough reason for me to risk getting shot over. This whole thing about publicly going off on someone has to stop. I understand the anger and the frustration but these types of displays are not helping veterans at all. It makes us look like a bunch of uncivilized savages with a sense of entitlement. We need to maintain a demeanor that sets the example. Acting like a 4 year old having a temper tantrum on the playground hurts us collectively because people remember bad things more so than good.

I live just outside a base so wearing parts a uniform or wearing it improperly is not allowed. That's fine with me, half of the kooks in town with baseball caps and leather vests covered by every name they can drop are phony.

This is just sad and 100% preventable. Unfortunately this is the trendy thing to do right now. The active duty personnel and angry Facebook veterans love to grab a camera and make a scene all in the name of stolen valor. At this point I don't think there is anything we can do to stop this and it just perpetuates the unstable veteran mentality when we do this in public. Disgraceful

the DOD IG can bring the individuals that assault civilians up on assault charges and the video is evidence

Must be guys from Lejeune. I notice Marines on the East Coast are pretty cocky. Too bad he should've asked them where they're stationed at and then contract their CO.

1LT William Clardy - I know there are, but from experience, I've seen it go from one ear and out the other. Nothing speaks volume with the lost of rank and money.

Sometimes it doesn't stick, Cpl Tou Lee Yang, but I have also seen it make the critical difference while leaving the rehabilitated SM with a clean record.

Being an officer in the Marine Corps is much different then being an enlisted in the Marine Corps. So it's not surprising that, you, as an officer got great results from SNCO in regards to corrections. Maybe if the person giving the lecture is a 1stSgt or SgtMaj, it might work. Anything lower than an E8 and it will go through one ear and out the other.

If you check my bonafides, Cpl Tou Lee Yang, you'll see that I spent several years with 2 or 3 stripes on my sleeves before buttering up my collar. It's usually a lot harder to get taken seriously as a random lieutenant than as a sergeant, and presentation matters a lot. A scorned woman has nothing on the wrath of a good senior non-com who is feeling professionally embarrassed by the conduct of one or more of his troops.
I know first-hand the joys that can come from being on a first sergeant's list -- I still have very clear memories of spending a couple of weeks' worth of evenings stripping and rewaxing the orderly room floor with some fellow miscreants, using nothing larger or sharper than a P38 for the scraping. And as a sergeant, I can remember admiring someone else's ingenuity in defining corrective training -- even in sandy terrain, spending a couple of weekends in the sun shifting an intact foxhole through 50 feet of dirt and then back makes for a lasting memory as well as an object lesson as to who is in charge and what is unacceptable.

Sadly enough I know now a dozen veterans who purposely do NOT wear regalia because of harassment.

I don't now , for that reason because I fear it might occur with this new bunch of GWOT dudes , I can usually talk my way out of things , however I wouldn't take being assaulted and insulted that well, and I usually am armed and I can't physically fight anymore. SO why risk it.

Their punishment should be extra duty taking care of this guys yard, cleaning his gutters, and doing whatever other shit work he might have, every weekend for 3 months.

Those young Marines aren't veterans yet. They haven't served faithfully and well and been honorably discharged. If they can be identified, their commander needs to hand walk them to about 40 hours of VFW and American Legion meetings. Let them learn what a veteran really is so they can pass the knowledge on to their peers and, should they survive an enlistment without further incident, on to their subordinates.

Major,
Locate the nearest Veterans Hospital. Take a few hours of your time and arrange a tour with your SM having issues. Stop and talk to a couple of the extended stay “veterans.” Be willing to bet there will be a change of heart, character, as they stand a little taller as our “Colors” pass in review from now on. http://www.va.gov/directory/guide/home.asp?isflash=1

IMO there is no need to shame someone that is bullshitting being in. If you feel the need to confront them, take them aside and tell them you know they are full of shit and that should be it. There is absolutely no need to shame them. IMO, those that go off and make a big scene are just show boating and want as much attention as those that are faking what they did.

That should be a lesson that you can't judge anyone by looks alone. I hope the command for the marines gives them the appropriate discipline action needed for this incident

PO1 Miller,
I hear you on that. However, I would still want to at least try it first before escalating the issue to an officer or the “civilian law” process. Once you start those processes they take on a life of their own.
Not all counselling is the “wall to wall” variety sometimes NCO’s will use the good ol’ “heart to heart” (kind of…. sort of….), methods that will help the SM see the errors of his/her ways.

PO1 Miller,
Sometimes it is just a quiet chat over a cup of coffee and having it laid out on the table what is not acceptable and why will do as much good as anything else. There are always consequences for your actions no matter which side of an issue you find yourself. Take the one that “fits” your situation the best at least for the 1st step.
We do have some really hard heads out there that might need extra attention but even in my day they were but a very small percentage.
Hope you and yours will be able to get together and have a good Thanksgiving.

In a case like this however, I don't think a "talking to" would work. These Marines used violence so I think a little taste of their own medicine is in order.

Some state ID's are made with the word "Veteran" posted in the ID. No one can fake this because you need to bring proof (DD-214) before that Word gets stamped. Its free for all NY residence. Perhaps this is what needs to happen in all 50 states before one can rule out a fake from actual.
I will post mines to show what it looks like.
PS: I don't have anything to hide so if I get a letter from you, I guess that would be great :)
In my past I handled those whom say they served with respect even if they didn't actually served. Hearing there story's can be rather entertaining if I may say so, but to assault another human being for telling a lie is just not in my book of things to do.
