PO2 Mark Saffell, I was on the Ranger for three days and thought I had died and gone the heaven at chow time. I did get caught with the peanut butter omelet newbie trap on the third morning though – it was killing me not knowing what it would be like.

CPO Andy Carrillo, MS, roger that - although I didn't know it at the time. I would not have been able to tolerate the drama her life turned out to entail. She died of cancer a few years back and I'm now married to her little sister.

My "A" School roommate went to the Ranger in 1976. Right before she hit that ship in the straights by Singapore. Her first Westpac after the yards.

MSG (Join to see), Ah yes, I forgot about jerky - I loved the stuff.
I gave some to my Mama-san and she bit off a piece and smiled, but then she went about her work and I heard the toilet flush. She didn't want any more; I think she wondered what it came from.

Hickory Farms Meat and Cheese.
That stuff was the bomb.
I made the mistake of telling people that was what I wanted. Come Christmas, I had enough beef sticks to last until doomsday. SO MUCH MEAT...

Mostly Gedunk and I love me some Gedunk. I don't remember getting any books, movies or clothes. I do remember the one I got during Desert Storm from some little girl in the states, not so much for the Gedunk but the wonderful letter that came with it. I wrote her back to thank her.

Playing cards, we burned through stacks of cards playing Spades, especially on ship.
And yes there was the ship store but most of our funds went to supporting the local economy of whatever port we visited and cards were not priority in port.
