Great question, believe it or not I was happy I was asked for input in my retirement gift. I asked for something unquie to me.

SFC Stephen King - I'm a firm believer in asking the recepient. Unfortunately, I've been involved in enough "...why did you get me *that*?..." and "...those dates are wrong..." interactions that I stongly encourage active participation from the recepient, or basic confirmation questions at a minimum.

Honestly, the best gifts are going to be the personal ones. Whether it was a plaque, a ka-bar, a whole shadow box, we always tried to put a personal spin on it to show that we were really thinking of the individual and not just getting them something to get them something.
For instance, when my Sgt got out, I put together a mini-shadowbox, I got her the standard unit goodies, squadron coin, bumper sticker etc. Then I got her a print of our squadron photo and had Marines autograph it to send her off. Moved her to tears, but she was a good Sgt, so it was worth it.
Though personally, my favorite retirement gift was the one received by the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps. Seriously, I might only be a Cpl, but if I put aside enough money, I might consider getting something like this, because not only does it look comfortable, but it looks so badass. Though it'd have to wait until my kids are grown.
