SPC Mark Beard, I reported to the Reception Station at Fort Jackson, SC on 28OCT69. BCT began 11NOV69 and ended 16JAN70. I was assigned to 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, D-3-1- on infamous Tank Hill.
The barracks of 1st Platoon appears at the base of the black ink line on Tank Hill. The long one story buildings to the left of and parallel to the barracks were company sized mess halls. Postcard photo.

LTC Stephen C. I feel absolutely ashamed to admit this, but I will. When I arrived home as a permanent change of station (PCS) honorably discharged, and felt my body to see if I came home alive from Beirut, Lebanon, I worked for the rest of my life to forget ad many details about my tour of duty as I could. The only thing I remember is I went to basic training in Orlando, Florida. It was beautiful when we were able to leave the base. But, I cried for almost the entire basic experience. But the most profound experience that got me through was when Petty Officer Mins called me to get office and said I mattered. She told me to see my dream and see boot camp as my test. Pass the test. Become successful. Live your life. If it were not for her words, I don't believe I would have made it through basic training. Throughout my career, her words propelled me to succeed. After the military, her words propelled me to survive, in order to succeed. I succeeded at everything I chose to impact. When it was time to live my life for me, only, I am doing so. The Grace of God and the goodness of those rams in the Bush guided me along.

PO3 Phyllis Maynard - Good story Phyllis, I always remember what my 1st SGT in the 82nd Airborne always said, and used, "Get your head out of your YingYang". Lol

SGT (Join to see) has it right PO3 Phyllis Maynard, That’s a great story.
I was also fortunate that my drill sergeant at basic training was much like your PO Mins. My drill sergeant was SFC Richard DesLauriers. He was a kind and comparatively quiet man, atypical of many BCT drill sergeants. Don't get me wrong. If he needed to drop the hammer, he dropped the hammer!
However, he was in the business of mentoring before the Army even formalized the process and was most worthy of emulation. Extraordinary NCO.
I've tried to find him many times through various media to no avail, in order that I might thank the man for being the extraordinary NCO that he was to me and the other basic trainees.
