"Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is true strength."

If my mind is tired, the body will follow no matter what I want to do. If my mind is strong, I could convince the body to keep fighting. One more rep; one more step.

"Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change."--Stephen Hawking, physicist who has adapted to ALS due to his mental 'strength' when the physical attempted to limit him. The physical can only take one so far...

SFC Stephen King I think any Special Operator will tell you that Mental strength is more important, hands down. This is why small, wiry guys can complete, say, BUD/s, where bodybuilders might not.

The optimal soldier is both physically and mentally sound. I would agree that in special ops you need to be physically fit , but it ultimately is the will to never quit that sets you apart from others, no matter how big you might be. As the saying goes, "you don't need to finish the race in first place, what's important is that you finish the race".

Mental strength, to me, is more important. You can always improve physical strength easier than you can mental.

Mental Strength. Doing most difficult jobs in the military is not physical. An example: serving in the Airborne. Sure, you need to be in top shape, able to lift twice your weight, but as long as your mind is strong, you will keep going long after your body gives out. Your body also isn't the one telling you to jump from an aircraft and to take faith in your training, your mind is.

What do you think Stephen Hawking would say? I agree with him.

Mental: The reason being that to be physically strong, there are certain aspects to be mentally strong as well.
For example, if you are a body-builder or a casual person attempting to get in shape for the swimsuit season and you do not have mental strength to keep going when that "burning sensation" of the lactic acid starts kicking in, you are more likely to give up rather than pushing through the pain and uncomfortable feeling (which is something us Military Personnel are taught throughout our entire service. I.E. Never giving up, no matter the amount of pain or obstacles in our path.)

It is the same concept when going throughout everyday occurrences. When you have had enough and do not believe you can push anymore, even when it comes to doing a rather simple task like getting out of bed because you already dread the day prior to it even beginning; This is when your mental health and strength comes into play. Not only then, but numerous times throughout each and everyday (at least for me it is numerous times a day - I don't know whether that is healthy or perhaps it just has something to do with my bulls*** deterring ways/attitude).
Anyways, getting back on the topic at hand.
Yes, physical strength is important but as for my opinion, mental strength will always come at the top of my list.
