Anyone else? Been using a 5/8 Solingen for about a month and just bought a new 6/8 (below). I love straight razor shaving. It used to be a daily chore, now it's daily entertainment. The shave is so superior to regular razors and a hell of a lot cheaper than $25/5 pack after the initial purchase.

I'd probably chop my head off. I can't believe the Army even let me work on helicopters.

I haven't gotten that brave yet. I use a DE Safety razor and absolutely love it. I have thought about getting a straight Razor but still am not sure.

How hard is it to learn to use a straight razor? Have you had any slip-ups, or accidents?

I've always been curious about a straight razor shave but to be perfectly honest, just never had the courage to give it a try. Perhaps I should find a local establishment and get a shave or two there to see if I notice a marked difference. You have peaked my curiosity now.

MSG Huffman - you'll definitely notice a difference! Also, Lynn Abrams has an entire series on youtube if you want to learn more about straight razor shaving. His shop sells great razors and strops:

When I was Ft Sill, my barber used a straight razor on the sides of my head and I loved it. Never could find one at Ft Hood. Here in Kuwait, the AAFES contractors use them ($6 for a haircut! Awesome) and they are so good with the straight razor it made me reconsider learning how to use one for face shaving. Like others have said, it's a leap of faith to start, fearing to cut myself too much. How much of an investment is it to get started?

SFC Joseph Benavidez,
I left Kuwait not so long ago and will miss the shaves and cheaper hair cuts. When I loss all my hair, I hope not soon, I think I might put some time into learning how to "do it myself".

SFC Benavidez: I started by using a shavette that I got on Amazon for $20. They're a little tougher to use (and tend to cut more if you're not careful) but it's a cheap way to start off. I think I too had my first straight razor experience in Arifjan. Amazing difference.

Here I am, just five years after you asked the question. Sorry it took so long. And you're correct. It really is a helluva lot cheaper. I've been paying $45 for 16 blades at Costco and one blade only lasts 3 or 4 shave on my copper wire beard

MSgt Herbert - yea, de safety is where I started as well. Once you get comfortable with a live razor, it's not that hard to transition to a straight.

Before I went to the shavette and then to the straight razor, I got myself comfortable with actual razors by using a DS. Still a LOT cheaper than the Gillettes I'd been using:

I've been using two DE's for a couple years now. The Merkur 34C HD and some old Gillette from '62. Highly recommended and much cheaper then the cartridge blade route.

I've be clean shaven twice and both times it was at the barbershop. I found it to be much better than a regular razor. I've been thinking about switching back to that ravor. Stick with that razor Sir
