I followed my father and brother (and best friend) into the Marine Corps ('93-'97) and then wanted to improve the Army a bit so I transferred to the Army in 1997.<br><br>- Marine Corps (1993-1997)<div>- Army (1997-Present)</div>

You and me both - my father entered the USMC in 1963 and was commissioned into the Army in 1987 . . . I entered the USMC in 1988 and was commissioned into the Army in 1993 - the USMC makes the finest Army Officers! Semper Fidelis!

I first went into the Army in 1973, served for a hitch then transfered to the USMC, because I felt I wasn't getting the challenge that I needed... besides, with red hair, I looked much better in their Class A's than the Army green!<div><br></div>

I served a tour in the Army 73-77, because I really, REALLY wanted to see Europe, and I knew that I could get there with the Army. I did, and I had an absolutely wonderful time thanks to Eur-Rail.
It made those family occasions rather touchy though, as there have been Marines in the family for 7 generations, and at last count, I had 21 cousins either serving or had served in the Marines, so I decided to switch over.
In the end, I realized that I just wasn't Army material, because it just wasn't that much of a challenge to me, having been raised by a Marine DI, who thought that every ten year old child should know how to field strip and fire a Garand and throw a grenade. On the upside, my childhood was quite... interesting, since my parents thought swingsets were for wimps, so I had a itty bitty 'Confidence Course', and I recall being laughed out of first grade for asking where the Head was. The life of a Marine "Baby Bootie"....

I'm glad I was a Marine first. It's good for perspective. No matter how bad things get in the Army, they were much worse in the Marines. <div>.</div><div>No matter how long a deployment draws out, how long the ruck march in the rain is, or how deep the fighting hole I have to dig is, all I have to do is think of a few Marine memories, and it's "well, at least I don't have to do THAT anymore, I got this!" =o)</div>

A shout out to all of you former Marines and Sailors - face it, our time in the Naval Service made us more appreciative and gave us a perspective of doing more with less - so when it seems hard in the Army, well, there's hard, and there's rat_ _ _ _ed (fill in the blanks) hard. The Corps made me a better a soldier! Semper Fidelis!

Former Sailor got out, planned on going back into the Army. Whats the biggest difference in work and culture?

CWO2 Reck, I got off active duty as a Corporal (probably senior in the Corps in 5813 field at the time with 4 years/10 months TIG). Went to a reserve unit and the CWO4 (and this is why I love CWO4s) who was the commander, looked at me and asked why. I told him that the field was frozen. He, with a stroke of a pen reverted me back to 5811 and promoted me the next Drill Weekend to Sgt. When I went to the Navy years later, they let me keep E-5. Then USAF let me keep E-5. Deployed as E-5, switched career fields to Intel from Cops, made E-6 (TSgt) then 2 years later was picked up to be the First Sergeant (they like the Marine attitude), so I made E-7 (MSgt). Then in 2013 I made SMSgt still serving as a First Sergeant. Have been blessed. Progression began with a solid Warrant Officer! Don't let someone tell you it can't be done.

Seriously though, I actually tried to get back in to the Marines and keep my rank, but they weren't taking prior service, and were trying to push me toward the Marine Reserve. The Army was hiring, so I went. Although, I had to take a grade reduction, I made it up in less than a year.
