It was in Sept of 1964, the Bear was sitting fat, dumb and happy in Eastern Europe, the VC/NVA were trying to take over South Vietnam. I was influenced by those who had served in WWII and Korea. There as a job to do.

It is not a who but an event: the Vietnam War!

My 4 older brothers served in the military and I knew someday it would be my turn. I joined shortly after high school graduation.

I was of the Vietnam Era. Had student deferment for college and Berry plan for medical school. After finishing residency and family started wife agreed to my joining. Oath was 1 Feb 1991. Recruiter had the TV on in the office, he ask if I really wanted to proceed. I took the oath.

I was watching with my dad and was mesmerized by a police chopper chasing bad guys.
It then crashed behind a building after being shot at by the bad guys.
I looked at my dad and said "I want to do that"
He said what shoot down helicopters? I said no fly them.

So I did...Army Aviation

It was my draft board. I wanted to have some choice in what I did, so I enlisted before they got me.

To be truthful, it was my letter from Uncle Sam saying "Greetings". Went downtown to the Army Recruiter and 3 mos later was on the way to Basic Training.

My scholarship money had run out and I was 10 credit hours short of my degree in Civil Engineering. I did not want to spend the rest of my life working overseas on construction projects in remote areas. I had scored very well on my military aptitude battery and knew I would get interesting work in the Army. And, my family on both sides had served in the military for several generations.

Broken heart the man I was to marry decided we no longer were compatible.

My dad and I were in an argument about my grades. I ask him to sign the paperwork and I would meet out oof his hair and get my own mfzuture. We later became best friends . I retired as q CW3 Physician Assistant.
