My Uncle Danny USMC wounded on Iwo Jima. He always told me that 50 years later he could still smell the place.

My father set the example by enlisting during WWII. I was proud of him and followed his lead during VietNam.

Hard to say ... my Dad and several maternal uncles were all WW2 Veterans. When I was rather young, I had a profound respect for police. A few years before the Cuban Missle Crisis, on a Federal Holiday (don't remember which ... probably Independence Day), the Army set up a Nike Missle display and various military vehicles. Between miltiary and cops, it seemed a natural path to seek some sort of uniformed service and that actually started with the Boy Scouts of America with role models like Lord Baden Powell, etc.

SSG Bill McCoy - Yes, we Irish who do not drink booze (??!!!) or smoke, respect and protect all women, are every woman's dream.

How do I know this?
Because I once went in to Harrington's Bar in San Francisco (they served coffee also) and the guy named Sean O'Sullivan told me so.

Would he lie?

PO2 Robert Cadle - Nope! Sean O'Sullivan would not lie!
Tim's Irish Pub is a true Irish classic! ROFLMAO
An Irishman walks into a bar and asks for two beers. He then pulls a small green-skinned man out of his pocket and puts him on the counter.
As he’s drinking one drink and the green man is drinking the other, an Englishman down the bar who has had a few too many drinks says, “Hey, what’s that little green thing down there?”
The green man runs down the bar gives the Englishman a
raspberry, “SPLBLBLBLT!,” right in the face and runs back to
the Irishman.
The Englishman mops himself off and says to the Irishman,
“Hey, what is that thing, anyway?”
The Irishman replies, “Have some respect. He’s a leprechaun.”
“Oh, all right.” the Englishman says sullenly. They all go
back to drinking beer.
An hour or so later, the Englishman is really plastered.
“Boy, that leprechaun sure is an ugly little bastard!” he says.
The leprechaun runs down the bar and gives the Englishman a
raspberry again, “SPLBLBLBLBT!”
This time the Englishman is really mad!
“Tell that leprechaun that if he does that again I’ll Chop his
willie right off, I will!” he shouts.
“You can’t do that,” says the Irishman. “Leprechauns don’t
have willies.”
“How do they pee, then?” asks the Englishman.

“They don’t,” says the Irishman. “They go SPLBLBLBLBT.”

I was ten; Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. An AF Recruiter at the county fair patiently explained when I asked: "How do I get to be an astronaut?" Need to be a s***hot test pilot. "How do I do that?" Need to be a s***hot fighter pilot. "How do I do that?" Need to become a USAF pilot. "How do I do that?" You need to graduate from the USAF Academy. "How do I do that?" .... I graduated from USAFA in 1981 but medical issues prevented any flight status.

January 6th really bothered me. I took my oath very seriously, to defend my country from enemies, both foreign AND domestic. I will die for my country, if that is what is asked. My daughter married a second generation S.A.S., father took part in the May 1980 taking back the London Embassy, his son became a decorated S.A.S. sniper, travelling to 12 countries in 10 years and 3 medals from the Queen.

PO3 Donna Vaughan - I would like to hear from you as to your further explanation of your most welcome comment. I am in Sacramento, CA.

PS Of course I know the flag code. The flag is set to view from the street. We are behind it.

A former boss and his wife while I was still in high school working in the summer. They suggested I go have a chat with him andf that was all she wrote. The day after my 18th birthday I was in basic training. Never even bothered to register for the draft. My late mother had fun with that point but that's for another time.

I was born in 1947, and I am truly a Baby boomer. My father was a WWII Navy gunners-Mate. He told many a sea story, and I was determined to join the Navy as soon as I was of age. I grew up watching the old WWII shows on an old TV, in particular was "Victory at sea" series. I was an E-1 at entry to the Navy and went all the way to Chief Petty officer (E-7). While I was a CPO, I was selected for Chief Warrant officer CWO-2. And continued my service as a fully commissioned officer. I eventually was promoted to CWO-3. I served several years as a CWO-3, and decided to retire after 23 years of service, 14 of those years was sea duty which included the Vietnam war. My father lived long enough to be at my retirement from the Navy. As I was being pipped over the side by the side boys, I looked back at my father... It was the first time I ever saw him cry. That is why I proudly took the Oath to join the Military.

Chief - we're the same age, but with quite different stories (mine's on here too). My Dad was too young for WWI and too old for WWII. He was a truck driver delivering coal all over Chicago during the war. I was the later in life surprise to my folks, my Sis was 11 years older than me. I was surrounded by other Dads in my childhood neighborhood that had served all over the world during the War, so heard enough stories, and of course, all the John Wayne etc movies ! Was also a sickly kid, so I spent time reading about Patton, Rommel and lots about tanks...so perhaps no surprise that I went to Fort Knox and became an Armor officer myself. Thank you for your service, and grateful that your Dad got to see you retire !

A lot of little things done by a lot of people at different times pre-May 1978. A solid job. A sound career. John Sawyer, B. 08/02/1895 D. 08/10/1974 was one. Doug Hall a history teacher was another. My Great Uncle Kenneth May, SSgt. USAAC, KIA 03/06/1944 in a B17 with the entire crew, One older brother (USN tho...), another brother both USMC and USA B. 05/26/1952- D. 12/13/2018, the conflict of Vietnam on the news everyday when I was a kid... and the disgust I had for the unpatriotic protesters that Walter Cronkite and others put out every day on the television, all 3 of them CBS, NBC and ABC.
