In all actuality, I influenced myself to take the oath. Thought it was the right thing to do and I wanted to be apart of something as well as defend the country whether it be 2 or 20 years.

Who influenced me ? ... Uncle Sam !!! Back when there was a draft (VIetnam Era). I was invited to the induction center where they found that I was wearing dental braces. They diefered me, BUT contacted my dentist. Four days after the braces were taken off, I got a letter inviting me back to the induction center for a new evaluation. Four days after THAT physical, I got a letter requesting my presence back at the induction center - not for a physical, but to take an all expenses paid vacation at some US Army base, beginning in one week. My dad had been a sailor. Two days later ... so was I.

For sure PO2 Robert Archambault, the Navy looks after their own. (in my case, they tried - but my careless trail of driving tickets prevented my already signed enlistment) Always had a heavy throttle - motorcycle - and after I left the service, a heavy foot. I guess it's just something about speed that invigorates my spirit.

No one did. I joined because i wanted to. Kinda a lineage thing. My dad served 27 years in the air force. I made the mistake of going infantry. Lol. Not necessarily the job, but as a 49 year old, my body sucks. But i did fir the most part enjoy serving. I'd do it again in a heart beat but go air force myself. Haha

Sometimes you learn best by your mistakes. That's the story of my life. I've made some duzzies.

I enlisted in the New Mexico Air National Guard on 28 January 1960, halfway through my freshman year at the University of New Mexico. I had joined the AFROTC program at the university at the beginning of my first semester and was motivated to explore the national guard option as a means of acquiring experience and also establishing longevity if I became commissioned later on. The Guard unit at Kirtland AFB was then flying the F-100A Super Saber fighter and I was attracted by the flying mission as well as the chance to serve part time. Prior to starting at University of New Mexico I had explored Naval ROTC but could not qualify for the scholarship program due to my eyesight. Air Force was a strong second choice, and my enlistment led to a long career as a Guardsman, as an Air Force active officer and as a Reserve officer in the Air Force Reserve component. For pay purposes I served 31 "good" years, ten of which were on extended active duty. I am a veteran of Air Defense Command, Pacific Air Forces, Air Training Command and Strategic Air Command from those years. As service in the AF Reserve included five years in a unit gained by Military Airlift Command. I have never regretted my decision to become associated with the Air Force. I served in Japan, Vietnam and on Guam with travel as a Reservist to Belgium and the Persian Gulf, so service considerably broadened my horizons. And I would not trade the many friendships I had as an Airman and as an Air Force officer. My retirement in 1993 came just short of my mandatory retirement date.

My oldest cousin was in the ROTC and became an AF pilot. Flew Delta Daggers in and around the Saigon area. He just loved piloting those air hot rods!

F-102A was a classic delta-winged fighter. I had several friends who flew it and later the F-106 Delta Dart, a newer and even faster version of the "Deuce."

I was almost a Navy flier. Was accepted to their ROTC flight program where you enlisted as a sophomore and got commissioned as an Ensign with 2 years service for pay. Problem for me was that you went on active duty every summer at E-1 pay. I was earning big money during the summer and that was my "college fun money" so ended staying in AFROTC.

Unfortunately my eyesight kept me from being a rated officer, but I took advantage of opportunities to travel on military aircraft whenever possible and I loved association with the flying mission. I did earn civilian pilot licenses including Commercial with Instrument Rating, however and have experienced flight in gliders, hot air balloon, and a blimp.
