John Le Care', the creator of George Smiley the ultimate low key cold war spy master, and so very many other unforgettable characters that helped forge who I have become today.
As to the very best of the Vietnam novels "Dispatches" by Michael Herr. One of the very few true combat correspondents who went out and chased down the real war to be the voice of the line troops. He and Gustav Hasford "The 13th valley" were instrumental in the script for "Full Metal Jacket"

Charles Shultz, he was great. His stuff was pretty deep. My second one I read their work just about daily. It is the Army Publishing Directorate. They just keep coming out with so many good books. The new new 670-1 was an instant classic.

It depends, for military books I like to read autobiographies from the veteran's themselves. But if we're talking about just regular fiction books I gotta say I've always been a fan of John Steinbeck.
