General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (26 January 1880 – 5 April 1964) was an American general and field marshal of the Philippine Army who was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign, which made him and his father Arthur MacArthur, Jr., the first father and son to be awarded the medal. He was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only man ever to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army.

One can't discount Ike's ability to balance the politics of Allied Europe with handling the military campaign of the Eurasian theater.

When we entered WWII our military was so lacking in resources that we trained with wooden rifles. He had to work with prima donnas like Montgomery and Patton, thus FDR gave him the fifth star to make him the Commander of Allied Forces Europe. Those two generals found it despicable that a staff officer was their superior.

Eisenhower as the architect had two major military problems: where to get a toehold for initial Allied forces, and where to get a toehold in Europe. He chose N Africa to invade and shut down the Mediterranean Sea to prevent reinforcements of the German forces in N Africa. The Germans plans that were not shot down delivered fuel, which is a very infective way of resupplying an Army. The German Panzers became non-mission capable without fuel. Later Allied forces took over Italy but were bogged down and became secondary to the Normandy landings. He chose France to conduct the largest amphibious operation in history (150,000) soldiers which eventually gave them the space to build up and move West to Germany. Once again the lack of fuel was the Achilles heal for the Germans.

SSG Leonard Johnson, thanks for the insight, you know if you look at history the Korean War is still on going and a Truce is in effect. He just had a different vision for success" Duty Honor Country" for America.

I should say, he led an army as general of the Army during his presidency. Too bad it had to be about the whiskey rebellion :-)

I would say Eisenhower. He did some major planning in our N Africa and European campaigns. He was a significant planner and had to deal with prima donna generals. Planning for D-Day was huge.
