True, however the White House is the seat of the Executive Branch. It isn't the "government" itself, but the residence of the representative Head of State.

I agree it should remain neutral, but the President, as a free Citizen does have some discretion on exercising free speech at his residency.

Agreed, Sir, this is not neutral. What this is, is a subtle way of taking credit for the actions of others (The others being SCOTUS) to set up the fact that it will later be claimed as an accomplishment of the administration.

Good point Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS but if he raised the Confederate or LGBT flag atop 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, he'd still be exercising his free speech but would be drawing a lot more and harsher criticism.

The President draws criticism no matter what he does. No matter what decision he makes, whether public or private.

In this particular case, supporting a decision made by another branch of the government is hard to call "outside bounds."

The Supreme Court is not just a court of competent jutisdiction, it is our Nation's court of last resort . The majority of the court, including the Chief Justice, not known under any light as social engineer, came out in favor of marriage equality. Hardly an over reach moment. This is not my quote but i think it appropriate those claiming over reach.
