Why is a better education system for children/teens and tuition/debt free college a bad thing?

Doesn’t this country deserve an educated citizenry?
In what way wouldn’t we benefit immensely from an improved education system?

People never cherish and honor what is given to them as much as something they earn.

Japan is actually a really bad example. In Japan high school is not compulsory. Students have to take exams for entrance into the best high schools which almost guarantee entrance into the best colleges.
Japanese Middle School does not do an adequate job of teaching the students, so most parents must pay out of pocket for what is known as "cram school". Children attend middle school all day and then attend another four hours of cram school afterward in order to cover the education gap needed to meet high school entrance exam requirements.

SFC (Join to see) - Good information. While the school itself is not up to par, the approach of many of the parents (something largely lacking in this country) appears to be pro knowledge.

CPT Zachary Brooks - It probably bears consideration that the problems we have in our public education system tend to be different than the issues we have with our state higher education system.

P.S. I can’t help but point out the obvious. Your reply has the word “payers” in it. Regards, SSgt (Join to see)

SGT (Join to see) Is that seriously the best response you could come up with? I’m not the one saying anything is free. I understand where the money comes from. You and your higher education hating ilk are the only ones intentionally misrepresenting the position to form a strawman you feel more comfortable arguing against. Shame on you.

LOL, higher education hating... Look at my profile, it has 4 (four) college degrees listed culminating in a Ph.D. I earned them, I pay for them. Regards.

SSgt (Join to see) - Just out of curiosity:
_Do you favor a progressive personal income tax?, if so
_How high of a tax bracket do you support?
and
_Do you favor a higher corporate income tax? If so
_Is a business executive of a international enterprise morally obligated to keep his business in the US, even if the tax rate creates a significant disadvantage, possible fiscally fatal in global competition?
finally
_If the income from government revenues will not accomplish your desire for tuition/debt free college, what government services would you cut to make up the difference? and
_How much money do we currently spend on those services you would cut?

So, do you want professors to teach for free? Do you want colleges in tents? Colleges cost real money. A college degree is an investment in yourself. You should be willing to make it only if there is a return at the other end (in salary). If we made it free we would have thousands of gender studies degrees, French Renaissance Poetry degrees and a host of other worthless degrees.
Not everyone needs a college degree. That is a myth pushed by colleges to boost enrollment and tuition. If you want one and it is worth having there will be a financial case for it, period. Don't look for a free lunch, there is no such thing.

I for one absolutely knows that I will never be the college type of man. I don’t possess the ability to learn within a college environment. I learn by doing, not reading out of a book. However my son is different than his father. He has a college degree. He’s a aerospace engineer with 3 degrees now and is going to get his masters in nanotechnology. We home schooled him. I did well financially for myself with only a 8th grade education through hard labor.

SGT Tony Long - This country (and the world) is full of people without college degrees that have done pretty big things. Steve Jobs of Apple, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook (dropped out, Sophomore year), David Karp of Tumblr, never graduated from HS, Evan Williams of Twitter, Bill Gates of Microsoft, Richard Branson of Virgin dropped out at 16. There are many others including Walt Disney, Michael Dell, Ray Kroc Henry Ford and Steve Wozniak. And these are just some of the famous folks.
Too many have been duped into thinking the only way to success is through a college or University. It is not the only way by a long shot.
