SFC Andrew Dowell I can not speak for all Vietnam Veterans, but It is a long hard struggle with the VA. Burn Pits could be the same kind of struggle.

SGT Theodore M. Hallock-you can speak for me I totally agree the VA is going to contest this Burn Pit issue for years, these Military personnel do multiple tours exposed to all kinds of toxic poisons and will probably have to fight as we have for recognition of their sacrifices

In GITMO w/ 2/8 we used to burn trash and garbage every few days using our flame tank section; it was the only live-fire tankers could do in the confined area of Camp Bulkeley and GITMO itself. Never stationed at a camp or CP in RVN long enough to note waste disposal methods. Our 'docs' were normally responsible for the time-honored tradition of 'roasting s***' on a regular basis. Normally in the field we just trashed the countryside. Inexcusable that American Veterans will have to struggle with the VA and/or DOD over medical conditions from exposure to burn pits as hard as they did to get benefits and treatments resulting from Agent Orange.

My opinion is that we did our jobs but our command sees us as a number not a multiplier

Most Definitely and probably worse records about what the hell was actually burned and it's Biological Effects. Temp that stuff is burned can change it's chemical properties too.

When DOD lawyers get involved it is usually the service members who are going to suffer.

The VA has already taken a very proactive stance on "Gulf War Syndrome." Many OIF and OEF vets do not realize that the illnesses related, such as mine (decreasing respiratory function, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, nausea, GI issues, etc), are considered presumptive illnesses, and the only thing you need to prove service connection is service in The Middle East and that your illnesses have lasted longer than 6 months, and did not exist prior to your first deployment, the key being that they are chronic.

No military paperwork other than a DD214. Your private doctors medical records will suffice for proof.

However, this is not widely known and the VA has made very little effort to promote it. There is also a Gulf War Registry health exam which will help determine potential related conditions.

At the Birmingham VA, oddly enough, the Gulf War Illness check in is also the Agent Orange Clinic check in.

If anyone would like any additional information, please do not hesitate to shoot me a line. I had to do all of the research to find these programs. Many times, VA employees who are Gulf War vets do not even know about this information.

Sir, if it is not widely known then how is the VA taking a proactive approach to the treatment of the veterans exposed?

Kim Bolen RN CCM ACM - Improper phrasing on my part. My statement should have read "The VA states they are taking a proactive approach."

My own primary care didn't even know it existed when I asked about it in 2014, and I actually had to find the clinic and get directions for the PCP to get my appointment.

My honest opinion is that they are willing to do everything they can to help, but only after you pound the pavement enough to find the clinic.

It seems to be their way of "regulating" the number of vets applying.

That's why I try my best to let everyone know there is a pathway to a claim for these issues that develop.

Thanks for giving me a chance to correct that.

SFC Andrew Dowell - , it started not to long ago, which has been made known, but it is strictly a registry an the Gulf War exam is an actual physical and goes a long way towards service connection of the illnesses.

The Butn Pit Registry is great, but it is a bit upsetting that they are marketing the Burn Pit Registry which currently does not offer a pathway to benefits, but the actual illness physicals which help with compensation are tucked away in the clinics with little publicity.

The speculation is that the burn pits has most likely caused this, but there are also some rumors that some of the chem/bio weapons stockpiles that were being disposed of by detonations by EOD have caused them. Additional possibilities are insect born pathogens and the possibility of rememnants of depleted uranium rounds have crystallized with the sand.

Regardless, these are topics we need to make our brothers and sisters in arms aware of.

Posts like this are the main avenues to get the word out. I'm glad this topic continues to show up.

More than likely, do we really know what was put in the pits to be disposed of?

I'm sure it will. After all the VA is asking service members if they've ever worked the burn pits on your disability interview when they go over your medical records for service connected injuries. So I'm sure they already know some of the affects and they're going to start keeping track of them for the long standing effects.

I remember being on shit burning detail. I have high cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, and glaucoma. I don't know if they are connected or not.
