There were over a dozen Republican candidates: Dr. Carson, Trump, Christie, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Carlie Fiorina, Gingrich and more. The Democratic Party may have had their process rigged but there was only two choices...
With the broad spectrum of Republican candidates, how in the wide, wide world of sports did we end up with Trump?

Clinton secured the nomination during fmr Pres Obama's first campaign. When it became evident that he would get the nomination, in my opinion, a deal was done, Clinton throws her support behind him, gets a prominent position in the Administration, and his backing for her candidacy when he leaves office. Pres Trump... a different case altogether. By all accounts he should not have got the nomination, and, again in my opinion, nobody, including Pres Trump, thought he'd get the nomination, his rhetoric, as un-political as it was at times, simply overpowered his opponents. As seasoned politicians they should have easily countered him, but in many of the debates I watched his fellow candidates looked weak and unsure. An electorate tired of the same old political banality gave him the nod.

Well, I live in Texas and every election for Governor the Democrats seem to push someone they think can win over someone that is probably the best fit. I usually vote Republican but I would have voted for Dallas Mayor Laura Miller (Democrat) if she ran for Governor.....she didn't though. I see it over and over again in Texas, the Democrats always push the Houston Mayor and try to get him or her elected. That will never work. They need to source from Dallas or San Antonio where the political views are more middle of the road. Republicans? They never should have let Trump run on the Republican ticket period. Now that the damage is done, I think we need to ride it out and let him lose on his own vs trying to stop him from winning. No better lesson than a political loss of your own making. As far as Hillary is concerned, I don't know what to say other than I don't think we have seen our last scandal.

That's a very thorough thought, observation and statement. Thanks!

Are you an advocate for a Democratic governor of TX or just stating why they lose?

I'm kind of middle of the road. In my view Rick Perry is a Veteran so the recent GWOT Vets like him but I think they would have liked Laura Miller just as good. She did not want to run for Governor because she wanted to spend more time with her daughter but I feel the Democrats didn't even try to convince her. Really the reason I comment is because you go on the Internet or Facebook and you'll see Democrats blaming dishonest gerrymandering and voter suppression as reasons they lose in Texas with the implication of just wait.....with illegal immigration we will force the state Democratic (too much demonization here and mostly untrue, that they control immigration or that gerrymandering impacts them in anything but a close election). However, some people really believe that on the right and it gets them pretty PO'd and it is part of what is driving the immigration issue so emotionally. However, the truth is, the Democrats always pick someone a little too left wing and they have a wealth of conservative Democrats that are well liked in this state to pick from. I would have crossed Party lines for Laura Miller if she ran against Rick Perry. So I am not a die hard Republican if the Democrats offer someone better.

I wanted Kasich to be the Republican candidate and Bernie to be the Democrat's choice....didn't work out though.

SrA Edward Vong I'm not sure that Kasich really stood a chance. We all know now that Bernie didn't. Remind me to never go to Vegas with you!

There wasn't a broad spectrum. There was Donald Trump, and the others were exactly the same. They were career, establishment politicians. We were ready for something fresh.

MSG (Join to see) they weren't all the same; some were washed up a long time ago and some never had a chance. Ben Carson was a breath of fresh air, Carley Fiona was interesting and I liked Cruz because he has always been the underdog.

I will agree with you on Ben Carson. He was a fantastic hopeful. I couldn't take Fiona seriously, and Cruz makes himself the underdog. The world doesn't advance with underdogs in charge. I will certainly never follow one.

The simple answer is that those who voted said that is who they wanted.

Oh come on, you're not even trying. there is a lot going on behind the scenes that makes the voters angry on both sides which drives the train. Think of The Donald this way and see if it creeps you out or not; the founders wanted a system where anyone could leave their current profession/trade/calling, serve politically and return to their lives afterwards. Does this mean that The Donald is the original GW's man?

Trump found a way to appeal to the masses by turning them against the so called "establishment". Cruz never really had a chance outside of the evangelical states because he was too far to the religious right. While there is still a strong evangelical element to the GOP, it is a turn off to the masses that Trump was able to appeal to and get to the polls. I also think there was a "train wreck" mentality that got him votes, people wanted to see what would happen next. Rubio just didn't have any charisma to make a spark, and Kasich was too obscure and could never get traction.

I think Cruz started out really well and then he kept fighting with Trump. It doesn't matter who started the fight and yes Trump said unkind things about Cruz but as a believer we need to forgive. Jesus forgave us and none of us deserved it and yet He is our example. It isn't easy but it can be done.
