Every assignment is what you make of it. Some people hate base X "because it sucks" but they don't go out and do anything. Go out, meet people, LEARN. When you move on to your next duty station, start all over again. Go out, meet NEW people, and learn NEW stuff. Not only will that make you more interesting to be around, it may make you a better husband, father, Soldier, and American.

Cpl Kenneth Darby - Fortunately I was never stationed there. My son was and he did the throw the water in the air when it was freezing cold thing. It worked, the water turned to ice mist.

Not 100% true. The location and weather sucks but it's the only base in my 20 year career that actually gave a damn about the flight line maintainers. Still the weather is horrible!

I live on the Air base in Grand forks and its not a terrible place to be stationed.the worse part is the weather and how cold it gets here.

CW5 Mark Smith - Stumps is right. When I left Vietnam, I was aske dot name three possible duty stations. I chose MCRD, San Diego, Camp Pendleton, and Naval Weapons Station, Concord, CA. They kept me in California, but at a bad place to be stationed. Sand, rattlesnakes, and scorpions, along with the heat.

Johnston Island. A small atoll that was used to store chemical weapons. No town to visit on your days off, just the atoll in the middle of nowhere.

MAJ (Join to see) - You are probably correct. . At least the weather was a bit better than Minot. I have never been to Minot. But the reviews I get from folks that have been there go from "Its alright" to "miserable." Anytime your job is to guard, maintain, or fire anything that comes out of a hole, you can bet its not a primo assignment.

An AF guy I worked with had been on Johnston. From Johnston(Not near nuthin') to West Berlin. Quite a change, eh? I applied for civilian position on Ascension Island. By the time my letter got there the guy that was leaving had decided to stay.

It depends on how you can make the best out of a decision that is out of your control. When I received my orders to Altus AFB, OK, I was crushed... I was told that it is the 'armpit of the Air Force." However, I never had more fun than I did than when I was stationed there. I made friends and memories that will never be forgotten. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," but it was great and memorable!

FORT BENNING!!! Hate that place so much. Used to awesome, Harmony Church we were left alone, now it has all the Armor Basic Training and simulators. Used to be 45 on all the roads out there now it's 25 till you wanna smash your face on the steering wheel.

I loved Ft. Benning, when I was there lol, I spent most of my time there deployed to Iraq with back to back tours for a year a piece.
