Would any of you ever sign off on a target approval if you knew the target was a hospital?

This isn't about him. It's about you - as a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine.

Maj Mike Sciales - I think it totally depends on the circumstances. If the enemy was using the hospital as a safe-haven and/or firing on our troops from it, I think it becomes a target.

Maj Mike Sciales - I believe that the Afghanistan military are minor league and tribe loyal at best. I can not think of a reasonable reason that an American asset would be under their control. Platoon or aircraft for any reason. Is "reasonable reason" really a thing? Maybe some English major can help he, but you get the point.

Maj Mike Sciales - In the late 80's, when I was serving as the Executive Officer for the Chief of Staff, Allied Forces Southern Europe, I had the opportunity to visit Monte Casino with the Chief (LTG Tom Griffin, USA). We were given a "special tour" by a priest who was in the monastery during the bombing. He fully supported the Allies' decision to bomb it, as the Germans were using it as a safe-haven and had held off numerous attempts by Allied forces to evict them.

COL Jean (John) F. B. - Monte Cassino is an excellent training point. I used to use it when I taught the subject because it clearly illustrates the complexity of the issue

Once occupied by "the bad guys" it is no longer a protected site....Of course, nobody would fire on a protected site knowingly.

No shit. War is a shitty deal. But if it is abandoned and verified, we destroy it.

Great points all, thanks. This tells me the training is working down to the right levels.
