For ISIS:

. Mao Zedong, a revolutionary who ruled China, wrote down his steps to insurgency which is pretty universal for insurgencies: (please give me literary license because my memory sucks).
a. An elite in society will start the insurgency.
b. The leader will recruit cadre.
c. Cadre will recruit foot soldiers through ideology or by violence.
d. They will provide services to communities.
e. The insurgents will use asymmetric warfare against the government.
f . The insurgency will grow to a size to slug it out with government forces.

MAJ Ken Landgren - here is how we lost Iraq starting in 2003 in the pbs documentary. President Bush was nieve and I was so pissed off when I found out how Paul Bremmer did not listen to the pleas of the Iraqi Generals nor his chief of staff who was also a retired general. We laid the seeds of isis and when President Obama left in Operation new (ISIL IS COMING SOON) Dawn because he pledged to get out at any cost and not keep a SOFA and 10k QRF I knew the money the u.s. was paying the local militias to keep the peace stopped by the corupt Iraqi government led the way for the ISIL takeover. Watch this in its entirety.
