"But just because we have the capacity for kindness, and reap real benefits from it, doesn’t mean that we always act with kindness. We may be too busy, distracted, or wrapped up in our own concerns to pay close attention to others’ needs or actively seek out opportunities to help. Or we’re just out of practice: Researchers have argued that kindness is like a muscle that needs to be strengthened through repeated use.
How do we strengthen kindness? Researchers have identified a number of effective exercises, and many of them are collected on the Greater Good Science Center’s new website, Greater Good in Action (GGIA), which features the top research-based activities for fostering happiness, kindness, connection, and resilience."

I attempted to give CPR last week to an elderly veteran at the VA hospital in Tucson. It was too late as he was already deceased, but I did try.

Your intentions as evidenced by your actions (employing your training and knowledge to benefit another) speaks to the kindness within you. Thanks for acting on what is in your heart, PO1 Miller.

I love the way he used 50-gal. plastic barrels and hand trucks to create his 'train'! Thanks for the smiles!

Would you be willing to share your most recent experience with kindness--either as a giver or receiver?

My wife and I were at dinner with our daughters family. A young couple came in and were seated in the booth next to us. The young man was in his Marine dress uniform and the young lady with him was dressed very nice also. You could tell it was a very important dinner for them. While paying for our dinner, I asked for their bill and paid it to. When my wife asked what I was doing, I told her and she just gave me a kiss and didn't say another word about it.

You were the 'cherry atop their sundae' of a very special night! Thank you for reaching out and adding your touch of kindness to both their lives, SGT Reno. How wonderful that must have been for everyone involved...

Kindness is a wonderful concept, but I think I can relate to it a little better when I call it "selfless service". I think being in the medical field raises the expectations of what we do for others by "just doing our jobs." Giving a patient a pair of your own socks, calming the 1SG with the injured troop down, and being the last to eat only meet our expectations...not exceeds it.

I think kindness for us means, telling the truth when even others don't want to hear it for their own benefit, giving more than expected even when our "emotional tank" is low, and changing roles periodically to increase our resiliency.

A perfect example of what you posted happened for me post my radical neck dissection surgery and at my first follow-up at Tripler AMC: my surgeon walked over to where I was seating waiting for my first nasal 'scoping and he gave me a huge smile and the warmest hug I'd ever had up to that point in front of several residents and nurses. It was then that I knew that he knew me as a person and not only a patient. Thanks so much for your 'selfless service', CPT LaFlame.
