I just came across this article: http://www.veteranstoday.com/2013/12/08/wounded-warriors-project-a-legal-scam/

It talks about how everything they do is contracted out and the officers each have a salary of 100k - 300k. It also talks about how out of all the funds that are donated only ~10% reach the wounded warriors.

This really bothers me because I know my wife and I have done fundraisers and donated to the WWP. Does this affect how you will donate? or where you will donate? Do you actually research the non-profits that you donate to?

I know I dont, but this will definitely make me start.

This article seems to disprove the theory.

As someone that works in the Veteran Advocacy space, to me the WWP is in a weird position. Yes, they are probably the best known Veterans' Support Organization in America. Their logo is splashed across everything from clothes to ketchup bottles. Celebrities are on TV helping to ask for funds for the WWP and the fact remains that when it first started, the WWP did some great things providing some much needed things to those service members that found themselves removed from the battle field with little more than the torn uniform on their back.

Fast forward 10 years and personally, I feel the WWP as lost sight of their original object and started taking on more than they can and/or meant to. Stories of the WWP refusing to send someone to pick up a donation because it wasn't of a certain dollar level are everywhere. Veterans are starting to turn away because they feel the WWP has lost touch with them. They have become so big that they aren't approachable. This is a big shame because the Project can really make a strong impact on Veterans if they paused and reevaluated their overall mission.

Personally, I benefited from one of those trips put on the WWP. About 2 years ago, I found myself laid off and stressing because I didn't have a job. That same week I got an email from the WWP saying I could put my name in to be picked for a trip to Chicago to watch the Big 10 Basketball tournament. The next day, I got a call asking for information so they could book my flight and it was awesome. I spent the week watching some great college basketball from the court. They put us in a very nice hotel and paid for our taxis to and from the airport. We toured the city and the 12 of us bounded for that week. But that was it. No follow up from the WWP since. That is where the Project is failing. Sure, that one week was awesome and it did without a doubt help me. But now, 2 years later, nothing. No emails or calls from the Project to see how I am doing and whatnot.

Like I said, I think the WWP has lost sight of their initial objective and have become so big that now rather than being inviting to Veterans we are looking at them as the big elephant in the room and really looking into their intentions.

I never heard of this I am an Alumni, but do not work for the WWP. As for myself I like to help out Vets and the community...so if this is true I will research.

So what charities ARE working for our veterans?

LTC (Join to see), I don't speak for other nonprofits, but just to name a few, in addition to Project Sanctuary, of course:
Fisher House
Patriot Anglers ( SGT (Join to see) runs this)
R4 Alliance ( A1C Chuck Steele and Bert Gillette run this)
Comfort Crew ( Angela McDonald works here)
Higher Ground
Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing
Operation Hat Trick
Veterans Support Foundation ( SGT Ben Keen is a board member)

The best way to answer the question "What charities ARE working for our veterans?" is to check them out on Guidestar Exchange or Charity Navigator.

Thanks, Sir.

The WWP is a media machine. They understand the ability for people to turn nothing into something and that is one of the reasons they do refuse some sort of donations; especially if they are classified in a certain categories like "religion" and "politics". They, the PR department of WWP, takes a black and white stance on a lot of what gets out there. If they were to accept a donation of "Christian" Christmas card but not others, they would have to deal with that fall out so their decision is to just say no to all of that.

I will tell you that I personally have a love/hate relationship with the WWP. They are out trying to help but sometimes it seems like it's not reaching the targeted audience.

The bad attention that WWP receives regarding allocation of donations is widespread. When I joined 6 months ago, I heard about the WWP wasting millions on salaries and whatnot. So I looked into it deeper than just Facebook memes and found out that the company does spend a lot on overhead. They have paid employees who travel the country full-time, helping 9/11 vets. They offer discounts on events and free dinners at restaurants weekly. That stuff costs money.

SSG Robin Rushlo, the reason your cards were turned away is because the WWP is NOT a Christian organization. If they were to distribute any kind of religious-themed materials, they would alienate anyone not associated with that religion. It boils down to remaining neutral both religiously and politically in order to gather more support. People from all affiliations, religions and political parties will be more inclined to donate and support an organization that is neutral rather than a solidly Christian, Islam, Jewish, etc one.

The Facebook bad mouthing reminds me of a similar meme that continues to float around even though it is full of false and out-dated information. Be careful what you believe until you have exhausted all means of research....

The card had Merry Christmas. Those were all it said that would make them "CHRISTIAN". I was told happy holiday was ok. Sorry it been Christmas for as long as I have been alive. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL KILL THE PC MONSTER.

I'm not arguing that point. I was born and raised Catholic so I know all about Christmas and the "Happy Holidays" thing. If you sent cards that said Happy Hanuka, would that be the same? Merry Christmas IS a Christian holiday, like it or not. People forget that. I'm not going to get started on this debate about religious holidays and whatnot. Its a deep and dark rabbit hole and I tend to get very amped up about religion and its associations with specific days of the year.

SSG Rushlo,
Personally I can't say anything negative about the WWP.  I am a member of the organization and recently when I fell on some hard times and found out the VA has not properly processed my BAH payment for the GI Bill (which meant I couldn't even pay rent) the WWP stepped up and sent some giftcards to me so that I could buy groceries.  They also are assisting me with finding a job again since I was laid off last October.  They call me randomly to check up on me and even called me on my birthday to wish me a Happy Birthday.  They also helped a close friend of mine that lost limbs in the war to find a good job that made sure his needs were met.  Personally I am a big supporter of this organization.

I have heard some less than flattering things about the WWP and the manner with which the donations collected are spent, like every other Veteran's group or the various donation based groups out there, one must really research them prior to donating to learn where the funds go or how much of the funds are used for payroll/overhead of the organization and how much actually goes to doing what the organization states it does.

Doesn't surprise me. They started off as a decent organization but then got into the political garbage. I will never donate to them.

Sory you were turned away, but they are an organization that specifically deals with post 911 Ves. I know they are very particular on from what type of organizations they donations from. They even go so far as at most of their functions you are not allowed to consume alcohol if you wearing anything that has the WWP logo on it.
