I used to sail in college. The Coast Guard has gotten several of my friends out of really bad spots, especially in storms at sea. So I have enormous respect for the Coast Guard. They know their stuff and are entirely professional. Merle Smith was a hell of a good Coast Guard officer and blazed some important trails in his service.
